HOW NOT TO ANNOY THE CONSERVATION TEAM 101

How to avoid getting yourself translocated

“There’s no point saving them if their habitat is gone.”

Okay.

Imagine someone takes your house, destroys everything around it, removes your food, your water and everything you need to survive, then tells you:

“Don’t worry, you can just relocate.”

Where exactly?

You can’t just find a suitable habitat on Rightmove.

And that is rather the point.

Conservation isn’t just about saving individual animals. It’s about protecting the places they depend on too.

So if you’d like to avoid being lovingly escorted to another team, perhaps don’t suggest that habitat loss makes saving a species pointless.

We have maps.

We have data.

We have opinions.

And unfortunately, we have heard this one before.

My non-negotiables when designing animal enclosures:

Future-proofing.

An enclosure shouldn’t only work for the animals you have today. Animals change, collections change and management needs change, so I want to see flexibility built into the design from the start.

Keeper practicality.

If something is unnecessarily difficult to clean, maintain or access, eventually it becomes a problem. Good enclosure design should make it easier for keepers to do their jobs properly without compromising the animals.

And most importantly: environmental benefit for the animals.

I don’t want an enclosure that is simply easy for humans to maintain. It should provide the animals with meaningful opportunities to explore, forage, climb, hide, choose where they spend their time and express natural behaviours.

The goal should never be:

“What looks good?”

It should be:

“How can we make this work better for the animals, the keepers and the future?”

Because the best enclosure design considers all three.

I’m a conservationist, of course I…

Have strong opinions about habitat maps.

Get excited when a camera trap actually catches something.

Know far too much about animal poo.

Consider finding a footprint a successful day.

Have 400 photos of what looks like the exact same patch of habitat.

Get weirdly excited about biodiversity data.

Can spend hours looking for an animal that is apparently nowhere to be found.

Have a favourite endangered species.

Think getting muddy is part of the job description.

Get disproportionately excited when a population count goes up.

Have absolutely no idea how to explain my job without making it sound slightly ridiculous.

And yes, somehow all of this is considered work.

Somehow I chose conservation.

Somehow I’m mapping habitat data.

Because apparently loving wildlife means occasionally getting very excited about maps, spreadsheets and vegetation surveys.

It’s not always tracking an endangered species through the wilderness. Sometimes it’s collecting the data, mapping the habitat, analysing the results and trying to work out what it all means.

Conservation is a lot of very unglamorous work that nobody sees.

And yes, I do have strong opinions about habitat maps.
