We are so fortunate in Orchestra of the Peaks to have such a wealth of talent among our ranks. Our Summer concert features a new Horn Concerto by composer and leader of our orchestra, Phil SteadmanSteadman. Inspired by the breathtaking landscapes of Norway. From majestic fjords and towering waterfalls, to glaciers, tranquil waters and open skies, the music captures the beauty, grandeur and atmosphere of the Norwegian countryside.

The solo horn, performed by Liz Ann Barras, guides the listener through a musical journey of reflection, adventure and discovery. With its warm, expressive voice, the instrument evokes both the power and serenity of the natural world, bringing Steadman's vivid impressions of Norway to life.

Join us on Tuesday evening in the glorious venue of Glossop Parish Church, to hear the world premiere of this exciting and richly textured piece.

Mesmerising, hauntingly beautiful and instantly recognisable, Shostakovich’s Waltz No.2 is different from the usual waltz form. Although retaining the traditional three time rhythm, the score utilises unconventional instruments, minor key harmonies and dissonant intervals creating a slightly darkened mood with carnival overtones. The most tenacious of ear worms…once embedded, this piece will haunt the listener for days!

We're playing this, along with other fantastic and very listenable music in our summer concert next Tuesday.

Orchestra of the Peaks are delighted to be performing this incredible piece again. Composed in 1954, Khachaturian’s ballet depicts the story of Spartactus, the Thracian gladiator who led a slave uprising against the Roman Republic, an act of rebellion precipitated by the horror of being forced to kill his close friend in gladiatorial combat.

The Adagio is perhaps the most famous piece of music from the ballet, and paints a scene of celebration as Spartacus and his wife Phrygia are reunited following her daring rescue, and escape from enslavement.

It’s a piece that has featured numerous times in film and popular culture, most notably, for those of us of a certain vintage, it was used as the opening theme for the 1970s television drama The Onedin Line. Described as lush, romantic, and emotionally sweeping, we will certainly be lifting the roof off the church with this one!

At Orchestra of the Peaks we do love to indulge ourselves in the music of Czech composers (Dvorak’s Slavonic dances were an absolute riot and Smetana’s beautifully lyrical Vltava has had two outings so far!), and as part of our summer concert we have turned our focus back to Antonin Dvorak and his glorious 8th Symphony.

Written in 1889 this work, despite its occasional dramatic outbursts, expresses a predominant tone of bucolic euphoria and the sheer joy of being alive in a world of natural wonders. Dvorak spent much of his time at his Villa Vysoka, a grand property situated in the rolling landscape south of Prague. Here he was surrounded by beautiful gardens, woodlands and lakes where he walked and gained inspiration for many of his works.

“In communion with Nature, in the harmony of its voices and the pulsating rhythms of its life, in the beauty of its changing moods and aspects, his thoughts came more freely…. Here he absorbed poetical impressions and moods, here he rejoiced in life and grieved in its inevitable decay, here he indulged in philosophical reflections on the substance and meaning of the interrelation between Nature and life.”

Dvořák was a devout Roman Catholic and his faith was woven into his music reflecting the idea that “intelligent design” is the source of both wonderment and woe. The opening of the Eighth Symphony’s first movement, a serious and rather somber chorale for low strings, gives way quickly to an audacious flute solo. Without ever subduing the dramatic element, Dvořák gives free reign to the poetic side of his nature through the ensuing movements of this beloved score, from the often melancholy rhetoric of the Adagio to the folk-flavoured, waltz-like Allegretto grazioso and the invigorating theme and variations of the rousing finale.

All welcome at Glossop Parish Church, Old Glossop Tuesday 9th June at 7.30pm. As always there will be a range alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and delicious edibles available.

We've chosen a delightful programme of beautiful, lyrical music for you to enjoy, including our first full symphony - Dvorak's 8th, and showcasing a brand new concerto for french horn by Phil Steadman with soloist Liz Barras.
As always there will be a fabulous assortment of edible treats and beverages and a prize raffle...join in to win one of our ever generous hampers.
