Scalarama Glasgow

Scalarama Glasgow Scalarama is a DIY celebration of cinema taking place every September + championing alternative film culture all year round.

Since 2011, cinemas, film clubs and film festivals plus various organisations and individuals who have a passion for movies have united to celebrate and encourage watching films together. Scalarama events in 2017 included radical independent features, live soundtracks, transgressive surrealist shorts from 1950s Wishaw, laserdisc classics, Giallo and '70s Glasgow-set sci-fi.

Day #30 (the end!) of our celebration of itself!

We're out of time - it's Sean Welsh + Megan Mitchell's last day/year as regional co-ordinators.

There was never going to be enough time to celebrate everyone who's taken part in Scalarama Glasgow in the last five years, or to remember every event, but the month has gone far too fast + lack of internet access subdued our posting this last 30 days.

BUT we'd like to say a huge thanks - particularly to Film Hub Scotland and CCA Glasgow for their support. And to everyone that's taken part in Scalarama in Glasgow and Scotland so far - whether it was for hunners of events or just the one. And, finally, to the audiences who always make all the hard work worthwhile!

p.s. Scalarama WILL return next year, so stay tuned. And all the resources we produced for film exhibitors, as well as the roundtables and associated materials, will remain online here: matchboxcineclub.com/tag/scalarama

It's day 27 of what would've been ! We're looking back at some of the amazing events and exhibitors we've had in the season in previous years.

In 2017, Glasgow Short Film Festival presented BORSCHT DIEZ - a programme packed with fake found footage, lizard obsession, Japanese Bunraku puppetry and a fanimaltastic TV show, all served up with free Brugal rum cocktails and Miami sounds in the hotbox surroundings of the Rum Shack Dance Hall.

GSFF have been supporters of Scalarama in Glasgow and Scotland for a very long time, with their industry programme providing a launch pad for our monthly meetings and, back in the sands of time, the I Want To Be A Cinema workshop that sparked activity here ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿ˜Š๐ŸŽŸ

In 2016, the FANTOM CINEMA brought Luchino Visconti's VAGHE STELLE DELL'ORSA and Paul Maslansky's SUGAR HILL to The Old Hairdressers, in a clash of art house and exploitation celebrating strong female leads ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿ˜Š๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ

In VAGHE STELLE DELL'ORSA, an Italian woman and her American husband return to her home town for a ceremony honouring her father, a Jewish scientist killed by the N***s. The pragmatic husband is confounded by the emotional nature of her family + many family secrets come to light.

In Paul Maslanskyโ€™s zombie Blaxploitation masterpiece SUGAR HILL, when her boyfriend is brutally murdered after refusing to be shaken down by the local gangsters running their protection racket, Sugar Hill decides not to get mad, but BAD!

Pity Party Film Club have hosted some incredible screenings over the last several years so it's hard to single one out, but their ongoing SUITABLE WOMEN: FILMS OF FEMALE FRIENDSHIP series goes from strength to strength. Last year, they screened Times Square (1980), Fort Tilden (2014), Muriel's Wedding (1994) and Clueless (1995) at CCA Glasgow and it was glorious ๐Ÿฟโ˜บ๏ธ๐ŸŽŸ
