Sometimes the simplest subjects are the most challenging to paint. This beach scene from the Island of Islay is testimony to this!

I can remember sliding bare feet across the ridges of the rocks, and I tried to capture this memory as much as anything.

The early stages of a painting are always exciting — expressive, experimental, and full of possibility. The challenge is holding onto that sense of play as the drawing tightens and the work becomes more resolved. I find my strongest paintings come from finding that balance. Really pleased to have one of my paintings included in the 137th Paisley Art Institute Annual Exhibition as part of their 150th celebrations.

The exhibition is open to the public until 25th May at Glasgow Art Club, 185 Bath Street — a stunning venue with over 500 works on display.
If you’re in the area, it’s well worth a visit!
