Announcement on film selections from FilmFreeway

This is a message to everyone who has submitted to Short Com for the next festival edition.

We’ve just learned that Filmfreeway has sent out notifications to the majority of submitters, or potentially all. The original notification date was scheduled for tomorrow, but we extended it to next week as we are still deciding on some films. We don’t know if there’s been some glitch or we accidentally put in the wrong date.

For some reason, last year’s message to filmmakers whose films we didn't select has gone out to this year’s submitters. Our current presumption is that it has gone out to the filmmakers with films we had decided we’re not going to be selected for Short Com this year.

We don’t know what news has been relayed to filmmakers with films that we’re still deciding on.

But if you have just received that message notifying you that your film has not been selected, it probably is accurate. We’re really sorry.

The most annoying part is that we feel a bit robbed of the chance to give a genuine, heartfelt message to everyone who submitted to us. And whilst we may not have selected a film, it is because we just don’t think it is a fit for Short Com and has nothing to do with whether we think it is good enough. We’ve some amazing films in this year’s submissions that have not been selected. Some films we think might be a good fit for our sister festival SI-FAN and will be emailing out waiver codes to those filmmakers to submit to that festival if they wish. And some films we’ve marked down for consideration for our Laugh Out Proud night we are developing for the future.

We’re working with Filmfreeway to see if we can get the intended message we wanted to put out, as communication is something we take pride in as an organisation.

Genuinely sorry if we’ve sh***ed up anyone’s day. We know this is part of the reality of running a festival and giving out this sort of news. We’ve been on the other end, and we know it’s not a nice feeling. But we always salute anyone who puts themself and their art out there. And you will always have our respect for that.

Again, our sincere apologies.

Chris Aitken. Festival Director, Short Com

Well done to all those who submitted their sitcom script by the regular deadline. You have until 20th July to enter this year's Short Com TV Sitcom Writing Competition.

We know that it is usually a struggle to find the motivation to write when it is sunny and hot outside. So we recommend you move to Scotland if you need a reason to be kept indoors.
