Glasgow. Hello. My name is Derek and I live and work in Glasgow Scotland . The name Sgian Dubh is Gaelic and means black knife . Sgian means knife and Dubh is black . It is the traditional knife you see worn in the sock of a person wearing a kilt . In reality it was your every day tool used for everything from eating to fighting . Some believe

it was the weapon you never gave up to the law and always kept it hidden hence the black . An interesting side story is that when a Scotsman was visiting a friend he would tuck the Sgian Dubh into his sock to show he was a friend and had no ill intentions to hide . There are similar customs around the world and one I’m close too because of one of my wooden sculptures is the Native American custom of offering a broken arrow as a sign they mean you no harm . The original Sgian Dubh was a basic sharpened blade hammered into a wooden/antler handle and bound by leather . The fluting along one side that some added was simply to increase the grip on the blade when scraping animal skins as the handles weren’t that strong . I'm always happy to help on messenger or WhatsApp and we can chat about what I have available or can make just for you . All of my work is hand carved including my metal working , nothing is cast so every piece is unique . My naturally shed/cast antler I find on or around the family croft on the Isle of Lewis. My Sgian Dubhs have an unconditional lifetime guarantee . Derek

WIP ( for me )
I bought a brass buckle a while ago with the intention of making a better fitting belt for myself as I’ve lost some weight in preparation for our vacation next month . Didn’t want to be harpooned while swimming in the sea , although there’s still a chance .
I woke up this morning with a design in mind and this is the result . No I’m not selling these as my fingers are aching after all the hand stitching involved. A present to myself for a change .
( however the Sgian Dubh in the picture is available ).
Stay safe
Derek .

Today I was out with a friend visiting from Singapore. Ian was finalising how he wanted his commissioned Rosslyn Apprentice pillar Sgian Dubh and he decided we should visit the original pillar in person . We visited a few locations on our day trip including Cairnpapple hill , Rosslyn and my kitchen . From the pictures can you guess where else we visited ?.

It is King Charles official birthday today and I still have this set available.
Last year I was given two freshly minted £2 coins to celebrate his coronation in 2023 and I decided to incorporate them into this set . Carved into the antler handle is the Kings official cypher . This will be supplied with one of my signature thistle sheaths along with a display stand , zip up case and my unconditional lifetime guarantee.

I’m so fortunate to have the friends I have . Yesterday morning a box arrived on my doorstep from Simon Needham in Montrose Scotland.
Simon collected these antlers while walking the mountains and also these agates walking the beaches of Montrose. Simon is ex British army and also an Olympic archery champion . He gave his valuable time to run the Scottish archery squad when I was competing in the Scottish team . He still gives his time freely to those that need it and is an inspiration to many . I’m glad to call him a friend.

I suppose it was bound to happen . I had a question sent to me asking if the three sheaths I’m holding in a previous post were Ai 🤖 generated.
Well here they are with some of my available Sgian Dubhs so there can be no doubt to their authenticity. The thistle sheaths come free of charge with all of my Sgian Dubhs.
