If you have ever travelled to Mallaig on the West Coast, you may well have travelled by road through Fort William or you may have taken the Corran ferry.

Similarly travelling to Skye, you can take the road bridge or travel by boat. The ferry to Skye from Glenelg is pretty special as it the only surviving manually operated turntable ferry in the world.

Which brings us to the next feature of our concert programme - the Skye Boat Song. With a simple melody and descriptive lyrics this traditional folk song stems from complex historical events and a story which goes much deeper.

Alastair Wheeler's complexly simple concert band arrangement of this well loved song features musical waves which echo the crashing waves of the sea as well as the beauty of the island.

Some of you may recognise this line up as British rock band Dire Straits, which then might lead you to wonder what this has to do with a Glasgow based concert band.

Well let us fill you in with a link about as tenuous as they come...

Dire Straits lead guitarist Mark Knopfler was born in Glasgow and also was the composer of the iconically melodic theme from the film Local Hero.

Filmed in various Scottish locations including Aberdeenshire and Lochaber, Local Hero is a film with themes as relevant today as they were 40 years ago when the film was made.

In case you hadn't guess it the Theme from Local Hero will be featuring in our HOME concert programme - thus completing the link!!

Some of you may know this as "the Traitors' Castle", but its official name is Ardross Castle and has been a home away from home for many since construction in the late 1700s.

Ardross Castle is the scene (and title) of the first movement of Philip Sparke's suite, "The Hymn of the Highlands", which we are featuring in our upcoming concert programme, as part of our collection of music inspired by Scotland.

We'll share more snippets of what's to come over the next few weeks but the only way to get the full experience is by coming along to our concert on Sunday 30th November!

We braved the storms to make it to rehearsals at the Fotheringay Centre today, just round the corner from where our HOME concert will be.

We will share a little more about the concert, the music and some insights from players over the next few weeks but make sure to get your tickets booked!

We are well into rehearsals for our upcoming concert "Home" - with a programme of music inspired by the place most of us currently call home, Scotland.

Whilst many of our band members are Glasgow born and bred, many have spent time further afield, and similarly we have several band members who have joined as they have moved to the area.

Joining a community group - whether it be musical, sports, knitting, battle reenactment ( just whatever you're into) can be a brilliant way of meeting new people, getting some insider local knowledge and hopefully feeling just a little more "at home" when you're miles away from a place you've known.

We hope this concert programme inspires you to stop for a moment or two and appreciate that for all it's pros and cons, there are far worse places you could call home than here.
