Mining raw stone in Zimbabwe

We often get asked about the scale of the mining for the raw materials for creating sculptures.

I’ve posted this photo because it gives a really good view of just how small-scale most raw stone mines really are - just a hole in the ground, a couple of guys with a couple of dogs, a pick axe and a hammer and a big metal punch and a wheelbarrow!

So rest assured, buying a stone sculpture that’s been made in Zimbabwe doesn’t mean you’re contributing to massive environmental degradation! Phew!

FYI the mine pictured is an aventurine mine and it is seriously out of the way. A 25km walk from the nearest tarred road. What a mission but hopefully the artist we have sent there to select his raw materials will have some stunning new pieces for us for 2027! Fingers crossed… 🙏🏻😁
