Farnham Rep

Farnham Rep The home of professional theatre in Farnham. Patrons: Hannah Gordon and Tamara Ustinov. Farnham Rep's audiences travel across the region to see its performances.

Farnham Rep is the company which brings professional theatre to Farnham every year. The company exists to perform high quality professional theatre to the many thousands of theatre lovers who live in or visit the area. The company's brief includes performing new plays, community involvement and educational outreach in the area. The productions are directed by professional theatre directors and act

ed by professional actors, with volunteer actors taking many of the smaller roles. Volunteers also perform all the support activities such as set construction, publicity, box office, refreshments and front of house. The company was founded by Ian Mullins, the first Artistic Director of the Redgrave Theatre, and started life as the New Farnham Repertory Company, whose main aim had been the reopening of the Redgrave, and its restoration to the people of Farnham. The original Farnham Repertory Company began life before World War II in a converted barn, the Castle Theatre, whose premises are now occupied by the Z**i restaurant. In the late '60s a fund-raising campaign was mounted for a purpose-built theatre in the town. The result was the Redgrave Theatre, which opened in 1973, paid for largely by public subscription. In 1998 the landlord, Waverley Borough Council, closed the Redgrave following financial losses made during its final years when a much-criticised artistic policy failed to impress its regular audience. Without a theatre in Farnham for the first time in over 60 years, Farnham Rep is forced to perform its seasons in a variety of venues, most notably a Grand Marquee set up on various sites around the town, and local churches. While Farnham Rep performs some small scale theatrical productions and one off entertainments at the Farnham Maltings, it is mutually agreed that it is unsuitable for full scale theatrical seasons. The campaign for a theatre in Farnham, new or restored Redgrave, is now being championed by two other groups, Farnham Theatre Association & Performers Together, while Farnham Rep focuses all its energy on producing high quality drama in local venues and at affordable prices. Farnham Rep supports the Farnham Theatre Association, whose mission is to ensure a community theatre flourishes in Farnham. FTA is committed to saving the Redgrave from demolition or, alternatively, to ensure a new and comparable theatre is created. Join FTA's campaign at www.farnhamtheatre.org.uk

A message from Rob Allerston.at the Phoenix Theatre Bordon.

With roots set in the now demolished Redgrave Theatre in Farnham, Farnham Rep have long carried the torch for high quality, professional theatre in venues that now includes The Phoenix Theatre in Bordon. As the second in a short season of co-productions between the two organisations, ALMOST A HERO by David Gooderson promises to tread the delicate line between racism and friendship and features an eclectic cast that includes writer Arthur Conan Doyle, did you know he lived locally in Hindhead?
Join me, Phoenix Arts CEO Rob Allerston, for an evening of high quality, professional theatre and help us to continue to wave the flag for live theatre. As a member of Rob’s Theatre Club you’ll get an additional £1.00 off the ticket price, a complimentary post-show glass of wine and a chance to meet the cast after the show.

Almost A Hero

Friday 17th November, 7:30 PM

Racism lurks in unexpected places in this true story of a little-known whistleblower (Edmond Morel) who, supported by writer Arthur Conan Doyle and Irish patriot Roger Casement, succeeded in abolishing slavery in King Leopold’s Belgian Congo.
But was Morel really a hero? Or was he racist too?
Claude McKay, the first black journalist to work in Britain, who later crossed swords with Morel, is our guide through a play which, apart from slavery and racism, explores the clash between loyalty to a friend and loyalty to a cause, intolerance in public debate and homophobia that has tragic consequences.
It also has a local connection. Conan Doyle had a house in Hindhead, and the play highlights a part of his life that is less well-known.

David Gooderson

Actor/playwright David Gooderson is best known for playing the iconic role of Davros in Dr Who and Simpkins, the Pathologist, in A Touch of Frost.
He is no stranger to The Phoenix Theatre, having acted there in several Farnham Rep productions. Two of his plays, War! Lies! And a Packet of F**s and Kolbe’s Gift have had script-in-hand performances at the theatre.
His most recent play, Hector, toured the UK in 2015, ending at the Ambassadors Theatre, London.
