Manchester Music Makers

Manchester Music Makers A friendly amateur orchestra of mixed ability. We rehearse at Union Chapel in Fallowfield on Wednesday afternoons, 1pm - 3pm (term times only).

Whether you are a new learner, a rusty returner or a more experienced player, why not come and join us! We meet at Union Chapel, Fallowfield on Wednesday afternoons, 1pm - 3pm (term times only). Feel free to turn up or to contact us for more information. We rehearse a wide variety of music which can vary from week to week. Our library includes both arrangements of well known classics and original

scores, from Gershwin to Beethoven. Our conductor Denise Beynon, is an experienced player and music teacher. She is committed to helping people learn about the music itself, the skills needed to play in an orchestra, and how each part fits together. We can be amazed at ourselves and what we can achieve in an afternoon!

One of our orchestra members recently visited the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam where there is an interesting collection of musical instruments. The viols are fascinating. Can you spot some key differences in their construction when compared to instruments from the violin family? Look out for the frets on the neck, the shape of the shoulders, the curvature, the soundhole shape, the number of strings. This is just for starters. Now how about how they were played? Thank you to Rebecca for sharing her pics.

Did you know that Manchester Music Makers and Gatley choir are closely related? The reason being is that we share the same Musical Director, Denise Beynon. There is a crossover too between orchestra and choir members. I'm sure a few of us from MMM will be going along to watch the choir concert on Saturday 11th July at Elm Road United Reformed Church in Gatley. Do come along if you can!

Thank you to everybody who took part in our recent poll
(Manchester Music Makers, Gatley Choir, Didsbury Good Neighbours guitar group, friends and family).
The question was well received and there was a wide variety of music nominated which ranged from Baroque style all the way through to modern film music including Star Wars! Many people submitted several responses as they went on to recall more music that inspired them.
Aside from there being three top nominations, what really came across from this exercise was just how willing and happy people were to talk about music. Coffee breaks and WhatsApp chats were busy for a while with people sharing memories of when they first heard a piece, its impact on them and why they would nominate it for the poll. I think we all have our own top three, don't we? Music that takes us on a journey and holds a special place in our hearts.

At Manchester Music Makers no two rehearsals are the same and we never know until the day, what we will be playing, which all adds to the fun!
This week we did Beethoven's Symphony No. 8 in F Maj, Op 93 followed by Mendelssohn's Dance of the Clowns. Two very different pieces, but as always we were up for the challenge!

A little more about the area where we rehearse. Union Chapel is in Fallowfield which lies three miles south of the city centre. It is a bustling village with a large student population. A favourite place to go for a walk is the Fallowfield Loop, a disused railway line dating back to 1891 which is a now an 8 mile cycle track stretching from Fairfield to Chorlton-cum-Hardy. The old railway station is still recognisable in the village although its frontage is much altered. Currently one side of the building is a Starbucks cafe and the other side is the entrance to Sainsburys. These days, Wellington Road where Union Chapel is located is a quiet spot, but with it being so close to the Fallowfield Loop, imagine the sights and sounds all those years ago with the steam trains storming by!

Such an enjoyable afternoon celebrating the 20th anniversary of Manchester Music Makers. Certificates were awarded for long term membership and Liz made a beautiful cake which was enjoyed by all, along with a glass of bubbly! Thank you Denise for your teaching and inspiration over the years. Thank you also to the committee and to all our members for the wonderful music we create together.
