This was intended to be a quick, out of the box build but the engine is just too nice not to show. As a result I removed the engine cover on the port side. This led me to scratch build the fuel tank and spent cartridge chute. I also added the magneto wires and one of the coolant pipes. Next will be to fit the radiator and I can close up the fuselage. I also started on the 3D printed Spandaus, as you can see they are just lovely and I hope will add a bit of wow factor to the build.

It's summer so work is slowing down a bit but I'm still making some progress on both projects. The cockpit of the Tonka is nearly there and, after procrastinating about it, the crew are now painted. Just a bit of weathering to add some texture and we are good to go. The Junkers D1 is also progressing but I'll save that for the next update. 😁

Finally, it was Father's Day here in the UK last weekend and my daughters definitely know me as, among other thoughtful things, they got me this cool mug😉

Slow and steady progress on the D1 and the Tornado. In both cases the interior is coming together with the seat now in place in the D1 along with some rudimentary instruments. Not sure how much will be visible once the halves are together but I'll know it's there. I ordered a pair of Master Model Spandaus to spice things up since these will be very visible on the model and they are absolutely stunning. I just hope they'll fit! 😀 On the Tornado the basics are painted in the cockpit and I'm doing a bit of test fitting on the forward fuselage and intakes. Neither kit is the click together type so I'm not rushing. The Crew have also arrived for the F3 from a nice chap on fleabay and they fit the seats perfectly. Next update will hopefully see the F3 cockpit all finished. 😉

One of the things I like to do is to have two kits on my bench at a time. Usually one in construction and one in paint. That way I can swap between painting and building depending on my mood. So, even though the Junkers is still at the build stage I couldn't resist starting something else. That something else is 's Tornado F3 in 1/48 scale. Since this one has a reputation as a bit of a tricky build I should have no problem getting the Junkers to the paint stage while building the Tonka!

The Junkers' interior is coming along nicely. Once I know how much will be visible I'll possibly add a few details before closing it up. I've got a pair of 3D printed Spandaus on order which should jazz things up a bit.

The F3 is another story, I fancy doing this one in flight. Either landing or just after landing and with the thrust reversers deployed so a pilot and navigator have been ordered for this one. Any thoughts?

And how do you like to build? One at a time or more than one?

I've always liked WW1 subjects, but with my shaky hands, it's something that I've always tried to avoid. So when I bought the Airfix Fokker Eindecker on impulse I half thought it would languish at the back of the to-do pile. But when I opened the box to do my usual playing about with the parts before packing it away I actually found myself glueing pieces together and before I knew it I had most of the structure built and my next build had picked itself! To be honest, it's a beautiful little kit with very little fit issues at all. The rigging turned out to be easier than I expected so I may try a biplane some time in the future 🤔🤦‍♀️! With nothing on the bench at the moment it's time for a tidy up and then pick the next subject. I fancy something different so lord only knows what that might be😂 Any suggestions?

First disaster of the year (well, there have been others but not this bad!)! The little Fokker was painted and glossed ready for decals so it was time to get stuck in. Modern Airfix decals are lovely to work with, being generally made by Cartograf. I decided to start with the upper wing crosses since these were the biggest and would look good straight away. Once they were in place I gave them a little coat of Mr Mark Softer just to help them settle down. All went well and I carried on but not using the decal solution since the surfaces were all flat and there was no need. This turned out to be a good choice. When I checked back about an hour later some areas of the crosses had started to dissolve and it looked terrible. I've not come across this before but it's definitely a reaction between the setting solution and the decals. I bit of test revealed no such reaction with Microsol so chalk that one up as a learning experience and move on. It would be possible to repair the damage by a bit of careful airbrushing but on such a cheap kit, nine quid, I decided to get another and start again on the wings. So, new wings are now painted and decals applied, no dramas! Propeller is also painted and that about wraps up the main build. Next will be a little weathering and the dreaded rigging!

After the efforts on the big Stuka, I was going to have a little rest before starting the next project but sometimes a model picks you and not the other way around. So instead of the Tornado F3 or the V22 Osprey I had lined up I found myself sitting at the bench with this little gem and it was half built before I knew it! I find WW1 aircraft fascinating but the rigging just puts me right off, my hands are too shaky! I guess we'll just have to see how this one goes.
