A bright and colourful set of nine new small paintings in a very different palette for me! Recently finished, varnished, and with the sides tidied up (very) late last night. There is a lot happening in the studio right now 🫣🥳

During my recent classes at Studio 164 Falkirk I mixed up small pots of paint for the students to create their work. Now I always find it hard to throw paint away, so rather than letting these leftover colours go to waste, I decided to use them myself.

Instead of mixing into my usual shades and tones, I worked with the colours exactly as they were and it’s been such an interesting process. It made me think about how unexpected influences, materials and limitations can quietly change the way you work.

Has anyone else ever used someone else’s materials, leftover supplies, or unexpected starting points and found it changed your creative process?

I think these will be coming to Tiphereth Print Studio on 15th & 16th August for Pentlands Open Studios (POSt)

A quiet moment of the Scottish coast, captured in paint.

‘Grey Sea Interrupted 1’ is one of my works currently showing in the summer exhibition at Greengallery in Bucklyvie until 12th July.

Inspired by the soft, atmospheric mornings found along Scotland’s shores - the sweeping bays, muted skies and endless horizon lines - this 50 x 50cm acrylic painting brings a sense of calm and connection to the landscape into the home.

For those drawn to coastal spaces, natural textures and artwork that carries a memory of place, I’d love for you to visit the exhibition and spend some time with the collection.

A little glimpse into my resin experiments.

Thanks to a Falkirk Creates micro-grant, I’ve been able to spend time exploring resin and experimenting with mica pigments and alcohol inks. Huge thank you to Artlink Central Limited and Falkirk Delivers with funding from Creative Scotland and National Lottery, for supporting this kind of creative exploration.

Also a big thank you to Sam MacDonald for inviting me into his studio last week. Seeing his process and hearing about his approach gave me the boost I needed to get stuck in, have fun and (maybe most importantly) break the rules a little.

I’m learning so much through these experiments. Some things have surprised me, some things have gone wrong, and some things have created unexpected results but that’s all part of the process.

Hopefully all these learnings will start to come together… yesterday I submitted my proposal for the Falkirk Creates Open Commissions 🤞(deadline is 18 June, so there’s still time if you’re thinking of applying!)

Week 1 complete!

For my 2026 I’m creating a small stamp-sized artwork every day, inspired by the landscapes, coastlines, colours and fleeting moments I encounter. Each piece is made from paper found the previous day, dated (with a fab egg date stamp) and added to this growing visual diary (very old fashioned stamp collectors book).

Seven days in, seven tiny artworks made. I love how these miniature pieces encourage me to notice and seek inspiration in the everyday.

Here’s to the next 93 days.

Two recently completed landscape paintings inspired by the colours and atmosphere of late spring on the Scottish coast (let’s be truthful, inspired by Orkney).

For me, soft greens and pinks capture that brief moment when the landscape shifts from spring towards early summer; fresh growth, longer evenings and the changing light reflected across the shoreline.

I’m delighted to have submitted these works to the A Day in May open call with 🤞
