Why I carve by hand
The other day on a TT live someone asked, “Why do it by hand? A laser can do it quicker, cheaper, and more perfect.”
The truth is simple: hand carving isn’t competing with lasers. It’s a completely different craft.
My work is carved start to finish with chisels, not machines. It takes longer, it isn’t “perfect,” and every mark comes from real effort, care, and time. That’s the whole point.
If someone wants a true handmade plaque or sign — the kind where the maker’s hands, skill, and hours are literally in the wood — then hand carving is where you go.
Laser work isn’t wrong. It’s just a different product. Faster, cleaner, more uniform.
But when you ask for handmade and then choose the quicker, cheaper machine option, you’re not really looking for handmade craftsmanship. These were the views shared by viewers.
