The Junk Yard In world dominated by cutting edge gaming & movies, there's something enchanting about retro gaming!

Sorry for the radio silence – it's been a while since I posted, but I'm back, and I've got some exciting news to share! 🎮

After a lot of saving (and a few tough decisions), I finally got my hands on a PlayStation 5! 🙌 It's the newest generation console I own, and as a collector, that's a big deal. I own a variety of consoles I even have an old Pong-style console! This shiny beast of a machine is my newest and youngest, my collection spans decades. I love being surrounded by the evolution of gaming.

But it's not just games I collect. If it's physical media, I’m all in – comics, trading cards, figures, vinyl... I just love the feel of holding something real. There's something special about the art, the packaging, the craftsmanship – it's all part of the magic.

So, what's the first game I’m diving into on the PS5? Spider-Man: Miles Morales! 🕷️🕸️ It’s been on my radar for a while and so far, it’s been a blast zipping through New York with all that Spidey style. I wanted to make my first game The Last of Us Part I, because let’s be honest – that game has my heart... but after buying the console, my wallet said “maybe next payday.” 😅

I don't know what it is about The Last of Us, but it just hits me in all the right places the story, the atmosphere, the emotion. I even loved the show (yep, I'm one of those people!) and proudly have a clicker tattoo to prove it! 😄

Anyway, I’ll be posting more soon, whether it’s games, comics, or cool finds from my collection. Thanks for sticking around. Let’s geek out together again. 💬🖤

Keep hunting in the Junkyard!

As a fan of classic Nintendo titles, there’s nothing quite like getting your hands on a pristine piece of gaming history. Recently, I was lucky enough to purchase what I would confidently call a near-mint copy of Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 for the Game Boy Advance. And yes, it’s the American version—complete with that iconic "E for Everyone" ESRB rating on the cover.

For those who grew up with the SNES, Super Mario World needs no introduction. It's one of the most beloved platformers of all time, and its transition to the GBA in 2002 as part of the Super Mario Advance series was both faithful and fresh. The Game Boy Advance port retained all the charm of the original while adding new voice clips, a save-anywhere feature, and a slightly tweaked difficulty curve that made it feel like a true handheld masterpiece.

Opening the box brought a wave of nostalgia crashing over me. The vibrant cover art, the crisp manual, and the glossy cartridge label—all in stunning condition. Holding it in my hands felt like a time capsule back to early 2000s gaming. You can tell this copy was well cared for, possibly stored away as part of a collection.

It's now part of my collection.

I think purchase price was around £25

In 2013 we was introduced to a gritty and deep game which has grown into one of the most powerful stories a game has given us. The Last of Us, developed by Naughty Dog, dropped into the gaming world like a storm—blending heart-wrenching storytelling with brutal survival gameplay. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity is hanging by a thread, players followed Joel and Ellie, two broken souls whose bond became the heartbeat of the franchise.

Over the years, The Last of Us grew beyond the PlayStation. When they released Part II in 2020, the narrative deepened, sparking conversation, controversy, and countless hours of fan theory videos. But it didn’t stop there. HBO took the challenge of adapting the beloved game into a TV series and succeeded. With creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann at the helm and Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey bringing Joel and Ellie to life, the show nailed the tone, emotion, and spirit of the game. Fans, both new and old, were hooked. Season 1 was a massive success and now, as Season 2 begins, the journey continues.

The premiere of The Last of Us Season 2, titled Future Days, marks a significant evolution in the series, transitioning from the first game to the complex storytelling of The Last of Us Part II.
Directed by Craig Mazin, the episode delves into the emotional aftermath of Joel's actions, exploring the strained dynamics between him and Ellie, as well as introducing new characters and relationships.

The cinematography in Future Days is exceptional, capturing the desolate beauty of the post-apocalyptic world. The depiction of Jackson, Wyoming, as a semblance of hope amidst the chaos, is both visually striking and thematically resonant. The use of lighting and camera work enhances the emotional tone of the episode, drawing viewers into the characters. It's a compelling start to Season 2, effectively setting the stage for the unfolding the story. The episode balances character development, emotional depth, and visual storytelling, staying true to the essence of the original game while making thoughtful adaptations for the television medium.

For me The Last of Us is a big favourite it’s even inked on my skin and I’m not done yet. More Last of Us tattoos are incoming!

So I've thought on and off about adding VHS to my media collection for a while now and at the weekend I went for it!

In today’s world of 4K streaming and on-demand content, it’s easy to forget a time when watching a movie at home was a luxury and a bit of a ritual. But rewind back to the late 1970s and early 1980s, and you’ll find the humble VHS (Video Home System) tape revolutionising how the British public experienced film and television.

Developed by JVC in Japan, VHS was introduced to the global market in the mid-1970s, with its first UK appearances arriving in the late '70s. Up until this point, home video was a concept still in its infancy, with formats like Sony’s Betamax already on the scene.

VHS machines first began to trickle into UK homes around 1978–1979. At first, they were expensive—early VCRs (video cassette recorders) could cost upwards of £500 (equivalent to several thousand pounds today). The tapes themselves were also pricey, but the allure was strong: for the first time, Brits could record television programmes or rent movies to watch at their convenience.

In the early 80s video rental shops began popping up across the UK, often independent, family-run businesses tucked into the corners of high streets. The video boom had begun, and VHS became the dominant format, beating out Betamax in what became known as the format war.

Of course, with new technology came new controversies. In the early '80s, the UK saw the rise of the so-called Video Nasties a wave of low-budget horror films released on VHS that bypassed cinema censorship. Titles like Driller Killer and Cannibal became infamous and sparked a media frenzy. This led to the 1984 Video Recordings Act, which required all video releases to be classified by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).

Throughout the 1980s and into the '90s, VHS reigned supreme. It wasn’t just about renting the latest blockbusters anymore people began to build personal libraries. From Disney classics to TV recordings, VHS tapes filled cupboards and shelves across the country. Rewinding tapes, dodgy tracking, and worn-out spools became part of the experience.

TV shows, sporting events, music concerts everything could be recorded. This was the true beginning of on-demand viewing, long before the internet made it instant.

By the late 1990s and early 2000s, DVDs began to take over. Smaller, clearer, and without the need for rewinding, DVDs quickly became the new standard.

The Young Teacher, a South Korean film from 1972 was made available on VHS in 1976 being the first movie released on VHS in the UK.

One of my earliest and most vivid memories is of my parents renting E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial not on DVD, not even VHS but on Betamax I think that's where my love of all things media started from seeing those changes in the 80s from Video to DVD in the 90s then the battle of HD DVD Vs Blu-rays and now 4K.
I've moved with the times I stream just like the majority of us all do but nothing beats putting in that Video or disc and pressing play!!!

This past Christmas, I was thrilled to unwrap one of the best gifts I could imagine: The Last of Us TV show on Blu-ray, an amazing present from the Junk Yard Children. It was the perfect addition to my collection and one of one of my favorite stories in any medium.

My love for The Last of Us started when I first played the game on the PS3. Although I never finished it, the gameplay and story left a lasting impression. The game was a masterpiece, blending survival mechanics with heart-wrenching storytelling. It introduced me to Joel and Ellie, characters who felt so real.

Fast forward to the announcement of the TV adaptation, and my excitement was through the roof. I couldn’t wait to see how they would bring this post-apocalyptic world to life. When the series finally aired, it didn’t disappoint. The performances, the cinematography, and the attention to detail were phenomenal. Every episode was a rollercoaster of emotions, capturing the heart of the game while expanding on its narrative.

Beyond the screen, my love for The Last of Us has grown through its art and comics. The detailed artwork of this universe—whether it’s concept designs or comic panels—captures the raw, haunting beauty of a world in ruins. It’s a constant source of inspiration for me. So much so that I now wear the art on my skin—a clicker tattoo that serves as both a tribute to this incredible story and a reminder of its impact on me.
Tattoo by Laura Wright at Ten Thirteen Tattoo Studio West Auckland.

The Blu-ray set is more than just a collection of episodes; it’s a portal back to a world that I’ve fallen in love with repeatedly, through different mediums. It’s a reminder of where it all started, with that PS3 game I never quite finished, and where it’s led me—a journey through gameplay, TV, art, and even ink.

My New Favourite Obsession: Dixxon Flannel Co.

dixxon.co.uk

A few months ago, I stumbled upon what has now become my new favourite obsession: Dixxon Flannel. It all started when I got my hands on my very first flannel shirt—a limited-run Black Sabbath edition. Let me tell you, it was love at first wear. Not only do I feel amazing in it, but Mrs Junk Yard also loves how I look in it, which is always a win!

Since then, my collection has started to grow. Mrs Junk Yard, being the thoughtful legend she is, surprised me with some brilliant Dixxon t-shirts and even a new cap. I can confidently say that their gear isn’t just clothing—it’s a lifestyle.

For those who haven’t yet discovered the magic of Dixxon, let me give you a quick rundown. Founded in 2013, Dixxon Flannel Co. started with a vision: to create high-quality flannels that combine style, comfort, and durability. They wanted their flannels to be as versatile as the people who wear them—whether you’re working hard, hanging out, or heading out for a night on the town.

What sets them apart is their dedication to quality and creativity. They’ve mastered the art of limited runs, making each piece feel exclusive and unique. Whether you’re into music, bikes, or just looking sharp, there’s a Dixxon for you.

Dixxon isn’t just for the fellas. They’ve got an incredible range for women, too, so Mrs Junk Yard could easily join in on the obsession. But they didn’t stop there. They’ve even thought about the little demons from hell—kids! Yes, Dixxon makes garments for those tiny humans (don’t worry, I love kids—I even own some). And for those with furry friends, they’ve got something for your furbabies too. It’s a brand that thinks of everyone, big or small, human or otherwise.

Dixxon has nailed that perfect mix of style, comfort, and durability. Every piece I’ve worn feels like it’s been made just for me, and there’s a certain confidence that comes with wearing something you genuinely love. Whether it’s a flannel, a t-shirt, or a cap, Dixxon’s attention to detail shines through.

If you haven’t checked them out yet, do yourself a favor and head over to their website. But be warned—once you get your first Dixxon, you’ll be hooked. People don’t just walk to Dixxon; they run. And trust me, it’s worth it.

Nintendo DS Doctor Who Top Trumps. As a massive Doctor Who fan this was a game i could not turn down.

For fans of Doctor Who and card games, the Doctor Who Top Trumps for the Nintendo DS is a delightful piece of nostalgia that blends classic card gameplay with the excitement of the Doctor's universe.
Released in 2008, this game takes the iconic Top Trumps card format and infuses it with characters, aliens, and adventures from the Doctor Who TV series, offering a unique twist for fans of both the show and gaming on the Nintendo DS.

Top Trumps is a game with roots in the 1970s, where players compare the stats on their cards to try and beat their opponents. Doctor Who: Top Trumps for the DS applies this concept to characters from the show's "New Who" era, covering popular elements from the Ninth and Tenth Doctor’s timelines. The cards in this game feature well-known characters, villains, and monsters like Daleks, Cybermen, The Master, and even the TARDIS, each with unique stats.

The categories used in the game, like "Brains," "Courage," "Monster Rating," and "Special Abilities," are both fun and fitting, allowing players to see a strategic side of their favorite characters. For instance, a Dalek card might score higher in "Monster Rating" but fall short in "Brains" compared to The Doctor or Rose.

With two game play modes available Story Mode the Doctor and Martha’s journey, or the Master and Sarah Jane’s mission. Each has a storyline that progresses as players win games and collect special Top Trumps cards, and each story unlocks new characters and opponents.

Or Quick play this mode is for those who just want a fast, casual game without the narrative. Quick Play is an excellent way to play when you want to jump straight into a match.

For a game that’s over a decade old, Doctor Who Top Trumps on the DS holds up surprisingly well. The graphics might not be groundbreaking by today’s standards, but they capture the essence of each character with a bit of stylized flair. Plus, the sound effects and music help create the iconic Doctor Who atmosphere, pulling players into the game’s world.
Faithful to Doctor Who the characters, settings, and storyline elements are all true to the Doctor Who universe.

Top Trumps' rules are simple, making the game accessible for all ages. Which makes it easy to learn, at the same time the game has simple mechanics and may seem repetative to some players, the limitations of the graphics may not apeal to modern gamers especially if there not fans Doctor Who.
