This piece is written in the imagined voice of a young woman held in one of the mother‑and‑baby institutions that operated across the UK and Ireland for decades. These were places where girls were hidden, shamed, and separated from their children under the authority of church and state. Many were forced into labour, denied choices, and pressured into signing away their babies. The poem gives voice to someone who never got to speak — a girl whose child was taken, whose grief was silenced, and whose story was buried beneath polite apologies and official records. What you’re about to hear is her testimony: raw, angry, exhausted, and unfiltered. It is not a historical document, but a human imagining of what so many lived through. It is a voice that could have been one of theirs.
