I started Time Capsule Productions for two reasons, because I wanted to get back to audio production and because I wanted to preserve people's life stories in their own words. And I did this and even expanded into audio & video guestbooks.

My new project Life In Fife Archive does all of that and more, expanding to record with businessess, charities, community groups and creatives too. All in to show Fife and the world what this kingdom has to offer.

Usually the black audio guestbook phone is the most popular but recently I've seen a uplift in bookings for this white phone.

It's great to see this guestbook getting some love but it does mean that if you are looking to book audio guestbooks in August/September this year your options are becoming limited.

Make sure to book the phone that you want before it's too late!

Here is part 2 of my chat with The Human Collective and this one is very personal as I talk about my Dad.

"With the life story recording stuff, Dad was the first person I recorded, he was the test. It was one of those things where I never really spoke to him about his life so it was the perfect opportunity to get him to talk and to see if it would work.

It went well, it's evolved since then but it taught me what I needed to fix. Initially he'd wrote it down but it didn't come across right but bullet points help, it's daunting knowing you're being recorded so having it in front of you makes it easier, I also recorded my Mum and my grandparents.

Last April, my Dad died in a motorbike accident. It took a few days for me to remember that I had his life story in a recording, the sole reason for doing this, to preserve a story was suddenly in front of me. It took me a few days to listen to it, it was like he was still here. I was going to do a shortened version at his funeral but it was too soon for many of the family. Having it's a comfort and I've listened to it a few times, but now at a year since it happened, it became harder to listen to.

Initially it was like he was here, chatting away. But through the passage of time since then, it's that reality that he's not and that he's gone. As part of all this, I go into schools and discuss the "D word" and we talk about death and the recording of these memories and just how important it is. I had clips of my family talking and suddenly I hear his voice and I'm fighting back tears in a classroom full of young people.

I'm glad I've got it, and my stepmum who had only married my dad a few weeks before said she listens to it all the time. I'm just so happy that we have it, this is why I do it now, this it what it means to me. People will get in touch after listening to the recordings I've done for them and they'll tell me how emotional it is for them. I did one and not long after, the gentlemen sadly passed away. He got to listen to it as well and she said she'd cherish that forever.

My Dads name was Ian and people called him Toby, his friends called him that. He was always up for a laugh and he liked a beer. He enjoyed fishing too. He was a mechanic and so any time he could use his skills, he would. When we did his recording, he noticed how flimsy the microphone stands were so he took them away and fixed them, so they were better for the next one. He was just always helpful and I know I've said it already but this is why it matters to me"

Please support my friends venture, what we do is similar but so different, for Lewis it's more work, more editing. If you can give this a wee share incase anybody wants to tell him their story. Thanks 🫢🏻

It's really strange to be on the other side of an interview for a change.

I'm more of a listener than a talker usually which is why I enjoy recording people's stories but when The Human Collective says they want to chat, you don't say no.

I've been in awe of what Ryan does with his photography and sharing people's stories for a while now. Partly because it is similar to what I do but also becausethe way the stories are told and presented are so engaging and he always manages to get his subjects to open up.

If you don't follow The Human Collective go and do that and if you like the sound of what we do also give Life In Fife Archive a follow and maybe you will see us work together one day.

"My name is Lewis and I'm an Audio Producer based here in Fife.

I studied Radio at University and once Ieft, it was difficult to find work in the industry and so I made one myself which became the Time Capsule Productions. It came from wanting to tell peoples stories, like the everyday people who don't get a platform to talk about themselves, but I wanted to do it in a more personal way, something they could do for their family. Lifelong stories and combine it with music they love with sound effects, something deeply personal, told by them.

It can be costly to put together, equipment and editing, lots of editing but not everybody has money to spend but I wanted to keep telling stories, so Life In Fife Archive came from that which is very similar to The Human Collective. That goal of meeting people, telling their story and presenting it in a way to preserve it.

Everybody has a story to tell as you know regardless of whether they've travelled the world or lived in the same place all of their life, it doesn't matter. Every single story is important and that's what I tell people. Stories that are shared every year at Christmas around the dinner table, it's about preserving that kind of magic.

For me it's always that comment "I wish I'd known all this before" because many people don't think to sit someone down like we do and let them talk, it doesn't make them a bad person, you and I have this thing in us where we want to preserve that, capture it in a bottle and share it.

It's an absolute privilege to do this as you know and people are nervous at first but that soon fades away the more that they talk. The amount of times I've left somewhere and they'll say "come back any time" because they enjoy that moment, that time where they can just talk about themselves.

It's one of the most intimate things we can do for somebody I think, even if it's just an hour or so. To have that connection and listen to their story is so special. A few times when the recording is completed and listened to, I get asked "how did you find that out, I didn't even know that" and it's only because I let the person talk, I listened and they just spoke. We should all try to do that from time to time.

I'd love to build this platform, show what it has to offer. I'll be getting a crowdfunder going just to archive it all, build a site for it to preserve it. Make it a recognisable place that people can go to when they want. Anybody is welcome to get in touch through the page if they want to talk.

It matters to me, I know it's important because my dad died last year and he was essentially the first test subject for this, so if it's ok, I'd like to talk about him now"

Please support my friends venture, what we do is similar but so different, for Lewis it's more work, more editing. Tomorrow I'll share the second part of his story, give this a wee share incase anybody out there wants to tell him their story. Thanks ❀️

I had a lovely chat today with The Human Collective because there is a lot of overlap in what we do and the subject turned to my dad who passed away last year.

I don't often share my own really personal stories on here but Ryan (from The Human Collective) has inspired me to open up a bit because of how open he can be about his grief and his own life.

Here is a wee clip of my dads life story recording that I have shared a couple of years ago, its one of my favourite stories of his because it embodies what he was like.

Though it's sometimes hard to listen to I'm always grateful that I had the chance to record my dad's story and that I can still hear his voice when I want to and I know it provides others in my family with comfort too.

So here is just a gentile reminder to find out more about those you love!

This was an amazing use of a glamping pod at an outdoor wedding as it was transformed from bedroom to phonebooth.

The newlyweds had their reception in a marquee right opposite this glamping pod and as they had use of the pods anyway it made the perfect location for the audio guestbook phone.

It was easy to spot with a wee sign outside, it meant that the music from their wedding band wasn't overwhelming the voice messages and as an added bonus, guests had a little privacy to leave their messages too.

If you are unsure about where to put an audio guestbook phone for your wedding or celebration then speak to your venue, they might have a perfect wee nook or a spot just outside your reception hall that will work perfectly, just like this one.

When I record an audio time capsule you may only see me for an hour or two as I interview and record your story. But its' after I leave when the real work begins.

Tidying up the audio, cutting it down, adding music and sound effects are just some of what happens when I am working on the audio and getting that right can take time.

But it's all worth it in the end when I hear how much people have enjoyed listening back to it and sharing it with their families.

It's always a privilege to record a life story and I love being a small part of keeping those stories alive.

This photo is one of me listening to my Granny and Grandad record their life stories.
