It's really strange to be on the other side of an interview for a change.
I'm more of a listener than a talker usually which is why I enjoy recording people's stories but when The Human Collective says they want to chat, you don't say no.
I've been in awe of what Ryan does with his photography and sharing people's stories for a while now. Partly because it is similar to what I do but also becausethe way the stories are told and presented are so engaging and he always manages to get his subjects to open up.
If you don't follow The Human Collective go and do that and if you like the sound of what we do also give Life In Fife Archive a follow and maybe you will see us work together one day.
"My name is Lewis and I'm an Audio Producer based here in Fife.
I studied Radio at University and once Ieft, it was difficult to find work in the industry and so I made one myself which became the Time Capsule Productions. It came from wanting to tell peoples stories, like the everyday people who don't get a platform to talk about themselves, but I wanted to do it in a more personal way, something they could do for their family. Lifelong stories and combine it with music they love with sound effects, something deeply personal, told by them.
It can be costly to put together, equipment and editing, lots of editing but not everybody has money to spend but I wanted to keep telling stories, so Life In Fife Archive came from that which is very similar to The Human Collective. That goal of meeting people, telling their story and presenting it in a way to preserve it.
Everybody has a story to tell as you know regardless of whether they've travelled the world or lived in the same place all of their life, it doesn't matter. Every single story is important and that's what I tell people. Stories that are shared every year at Christmas around the dinner table, it's about preserving that kind of magic.
For me it's always that comment "I wish I'd known all this before" because many people don't think to sit someone down like we do and let them talk, it doesn't make them a bad person, you and I have this thing in us where we want to preserve that, capture it in a bottle and share it.
It's an absolute privilege to do this as you know and people are nervous at first but that soon fades away the more that they talk. The amount of times I've left somewhere and they'll say "come back any time" because they enjoy that moment, that time where they can just talk about themselves.
It's one of the most intimate things we can do for somebody I think, even if it's just an hour or so. To have that connection and listen to their story is so special. A few times when the recording is completed and listened to, I get asked "how did you find that out, I didn't even know that" and it's only because I let the person talk, I listened and they just spoke. We should all try to do that from time to time.
I'd love to build this platform, show what it has to offer. I'll be getting a crowdfunder going just to archive it all, build a site for it to preserve it. Make it a recognisable place that people can go to when they want. Anybody is welcome to get in touch through the page if they want to talk.
It matters to me, I know it's important because my dad died last year and he was essentially the first test subject for this, so if it's ok, I'd like to talk about him now"
Please support my friends venture, what we do is similar but so different, for Lewis it's more work, more editing. Tomorrow I'll share the second part of his story, give this a wee share incase anybody out there wants to tell him their story. Thanks β€οΈ
