After some difficult weeks due to the family bereavement this package arriving today was a glimpse of the coming weeks and months and the opportunity to play with clay and make some moulds for the first time in the run up to Christmas Fairs with Christmas Baubles in the making 😀 with thanks to Old Forge Creations for the speedy delivery and advice.

A little update from me…

Due to a recent family bereavement, I’ve made the difficult decision that I won’t be attending the Nonington Craft Fair after all.

I’m so sorry to anyone who was hoping to see me there, but I need to take some time with my family. Thank you so much for your understanding and kindness.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day at the fair, and if you’re going along, please do support all the fantastic local makers who’ll be there. ❤️

Pop in to Square Gallery and see my contribution to the Bodies of Water exhibition (it’s one of my bowls entitled “Waterfall”) and is on a plinth in the middle of the gallery floor as seen in this photo. There is such a great variety and quality of other artists work too to explore and see too as well as all the pieces being available for sale.

As someone that uses casting a fair bit just now I totally agree that casting itself is a different and often tricky way to create forms - it needs different skills as well as some that are common across using any type of clay. I’ve been refining my techniques using different types of slip over the past 12 to 18 months and thoroughly enjoyed learning successful casts as well as learning from some disasters!

Introducing Clay Mythbusters! 👻

Ceramics is full of myths, misconceptions and bits of advice that have been passed around studios for years. Some are true, some are partly true and some deserve to be put firmly to rest.

In this new series, we'll be tackling some of the most common ceramic myths and separating fact from fiction.

Some will come from the Valentine Clays team, while others will be explored with the help of guest potters, ceramic artists and industry experts sharing their own perspectives and experiences.

First up...

Myth: "Casting is cheating."

It's a debate that's been rumbling on in ceramics for decades, but the reality is that casting is simply another forming method, with its own skills, challenges and creative possibilities.

From complex forms to production pottery, generations of ceramic artists and manufacturers have used casting to create work that would be difficult, if not impossible, to achieve by other methods.

Different process. Same craftsmanship.

Looking forward to the Private View on Friday and the exhibition opening to the public from Saturday at The SQ Gallery, Market Square, Dover. There is so much talent for everyone to see and experience and I am delighted to be sharing this exhibition with all the other artists.

Holiday over but what a wonderful break it has been and so needed. Next week it’s back to making more great pottery and of course the Private View for Bodies of Water at Square Gallery on my birthday of all days and then the exhibition opens for all to enjoy on 27th June.
