Due to the ongoing heatwave we have made the difficult decision to finish the confetti growing season earlier than usual.
A rose bush has a natural life cycle where it would bloom, petals fall, then the flower head forms a ‘Hip’ which it would use to reproduce. By cutting the bloom to harvest, it forces the bush to produce more buds, something that flower growers have done for centuries, also known as ‘dead-heading’. However now that the south of England is 8 weeks into an un-precidented heatwave, forcing the roses to continue to bloom weakens the plant and risks them dying.
So we are finishing up our Petal Confetti harvest earlier than usual in order to protect our plants, not just at Redhill Confetti HQ, but also at The Crown Pub in Capel.
We’d like to extend our thanks to the team at The Crown for working with us for a 3rd year, and look forward to all being well for a 4th Confetti Season in 2027.

Post Heatwave Rose Harvest 🌹
The recent heatwave has a whole host of challenges and complications that you wouldn't even think of. Cutting strong healthy sap heavy stems during extreme heat can cause the entire branch to scorch and at worst mean the entire branch doesn't survive.

The Butterflies and the Bees! Flowers are such an important part of a garden ecosystem. They encourage an array of insects, beetles, and other 'bugs' which go on to help pollenate crops, vegetables, fruit trees, and provide a valuable food source for the bigger cuter garden wildlife such as mice, voles, hedgehogs, and birds.

⛅️⛈️ Securing Roses During Storms. ⛈️⛅️
Summer storms can be devastating to roses; when in full bloom the flowers can fill with rainwater, tripling in weight and putting strain on the soft new stem growth. This can cause them to fold, thus cutting off sap and water rising through the plant, effectively pulling a touriquet around that stem.
By using plaited/braided jute twine, we can secure rose bush branches from getting blown around in summer storms, whilst also not damaging them with tight string or wires. Jute string is also 100% natural fibers so doesn't shed microplastics into the enviroment.

🏵 Rose Haircut Day! 🏵 Sometimes when roses have a early blooming spree in the springtime they can end up growing 'suckers'. These are rapidly growing branches that pop straight up and use a considerable amount of the bushes energy, rather than growing new buds for blooms. This yellow rose was the first to bloom in the pub garden, so its now at the 2 month mark of its growing season already, whereas some bushes are only just blooming their first time this year. It may be that this yellow rose is closest to the pub kitchen so recieves some residual heat from the building during the early months of the year, or it could just be an early bloomer.
Either way we've given it a haircut, and it'll be interesting to come back in a weeks time to see how much the single sucker we left behind grows.

🌹 Rose Feeding Day! 🌹 As we work with The Crown, Capel looking after their roses, we work around their opening hours and thus if we are doing anything that could disrupt the daily operations of their business we plan it with them and on a day they aren't open to minimise the impact it has on their trading. When we spread manure (or Horse Compost as the garden centre like to call it!) we made sure to do it on a Monday when they are closed to the public, so any smells could dissipate before trading the next day.
The manure is 100% natural and helps to add essential nitrogen back into the soil, helping the plants to grow stronger. It also encourages microbes and earthworms which in turn help to improve soil quality whilst also supporting the natural biodiversity of the garden.
