Get ready to tumble through the year, one month at a time.

Leap Year is a joyful 45 minute family concert where music, mischief and imagination come together.

In twelve magical chapters, one for each month of the year, the show skips from the frosty glimmer of January to the golden hum of high summer, with each scene bringing its own curious character, playful mood and musical surprise.

Perfect for children aged 5–11 and their grown-ups, this is a brilliant way to make memories together during the summer holidays.

Tom Coult's La Folia (after Vivaldi) is part of our concert at Derby Cathedral on Saturday 6th June. He says:

"Vivaldi’s Trio Sonata Op. 1 No. 12 is a set of variations on La Folía (or La Follia in Italian), a folk tune that originated in 15th century Portugal, and whose name means ‘madness’ or ‘folly’. A huge number of composers wrote sets of variations on this theme – it became an enjoyably playful tradition for composers to revel in this addictive tune, steal ideas from one another, and generally show off.

Vivaldi’s set is my favourite, for its sense of abandon, its white-knuckle virtuosity and its sheer vulgar audacity. In that spirit, my arrangement is designed to be as flamboyant as possible – spraying the original with gaudily colourful paint and generally having fun. To enter into the Follia tradition, I’ve also thrown in small bits of variations by Marin Marais and Antonio Corelli, and at one point taking the music on a big diversion that is purely my own."

You can listen to it here: https://www.tomcoult.com/works/la-follia/

We've titled next Saturday's concert at Derby Cathedral 'The Lark Ascending', because 'The Lark' is such a well-known and evocative piece. But there’s much more wonderful English music in the programme to enjoy, including our latest collaboration with our friends at Derby Cathedral Choir.

Purcell’s Chacony is evocative of both the palaces and backstreets of 17th century London. Elgar’s Serenade for Strings is more romantic - likely inspired by both his bride to be and the open air spirit of the Severn Valley.

Then the concert finishes with Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs. To perform these, we're joined by Derby Cathedral Choir and baritone Jolyon Loy for a beautiful and haunting climax to the evening.

Join us at Derby Cathedral on Saturday 6 June to enjoy this wonderful programme of music with us.
