Daventry Comedy Club is a year old in December. Twelve months ago it was a new night at the Community Centre with no track record and no particular reason for anyone to take a chance on it. Since then, Daventry has kept turning up, and kept coming back. Thank you for that.
To mark it, the Christmas Special on Saturday 12 December is headlined by Stephen Bailey. You’ll know him from Live at the Apollo, Would I Lie to You? and Blankety Blank. More recently he’s been acting in Russell T Davies’ Tip Toe on Channel 4. His Radio 4 stand-up special was named Comedy of the Week, and he’s supported Micky Flanagan on his arena tour. He also made it to the final of Celebrity Coach Trip, which is arguably the hardest of the lot. Chortle called him “an absolute crowd pleaser.”
Stephen is from Denton in Greater Manchester, and his stand-up comes from there: class, ambition, and trying to get on in life without ever quite leaving where you came from. That should go down well in a town where most people can name the school they went to and the estate their nan lived on.
If you’ve been handed the job of organising the works Christmas night out, this one is simple. Eat in town, doors at 7, show at 8, and nobody has to sit through a Secret Santa in the staff room.
