David Lean Cinema

David Lean Cinema The David Lean Cinema, Croydon Clocktower This is a non-political campaign for all who want to see the David Lean Cinema open.

From March 1995 to April 2011, it offered the best of British and World cinema, as well as classic re-releases and recent favourites. It was closed as part of major arts-related cuts by Croydon Council. From December 2011 to January 2014, the Campaign screened around 70 films in the Spread Eagle and other Croydon venues, which enabled us to build up our support base and mailing list. Eventually, w

e were invited by the Council to start presenting films in the David Lean Cinema. We began on 27 March 2014 and we now present around 12 films a month, staffed by our volunteer team of over 70. Early in 2015, we became a Community Interest Company. Our long-term goal remains to see the David Lean operating as fully-functioning cinema with screenings on at least six days a week.

From acclaimed director Cédric Klapisch, the film blends humour, evolving family relationships and historical detail — from the arrival of electricity to the birth of Impressionist painting.

Charity screening, with special guests, of this “well constructed film about a thriving, vibrant local punk scene” (Vive Le Rock):

Wednesday 10 June at 7.00pm
ARE THEY HOSTILE? (12A) 2023 UK 99 mins
Director: Mark Williams ● Producer: Griff Griffiths

Mike Simister, lead singer of The Fanatics, sadly passed away earlier this year. This very special event – with an introduction and Q&A featuring Richard Pacitti, Marty Love, Griff Griffiths and Mark Williams – will be a tribute to Mike and will support Cancer Research UK and Mountbatten Hampshire.

ARE THEY HOSTILE? is presented by Mark Williams and Griff Griffiths, and spotlights Croydon punk and New Wave bands from 1977-1985. We're showing the leaner director’s cut with more music and less talk, while retaining interviews with DJ Peter Fox and members of The Fanatics (Mike is second from the left in photo), The Bad Actors, Case, The Daleks, The Heroes, The Marines, The Straps and Johnny Moped.

Arrive early because there will be a (cash only) table with some desirable donations – vinyl, T-shirts, books, etc – with all proceeds going to the two charities.

AKIRA (15) 1988 Japan 125 mins

Katsuhiro Otomo’s dystopian cyberpunk film introduced the western world to the cinematic spectacle that anime has to offer. A secret military project endangers Neo-Tokyo when it turns a biker gang member into a rampaging psychic psychopath who can only be stopped by two teenagers and a group of psychics.

Warning: this film contains a sequence of flashing lights which might affect people who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy.

CALIFORNIA SCHEMIN' (15) 2025 UK/USA 107 mins
Director: James McAvoy ● Stars: Séamus McLean Ross, Samuel Bottomley, James McAvoy

A sharp, high-energy tale of musical ambition, based on an outrageous true story. In the early 2000s in Dundee, aspiring rappers Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd are told they’re “too Scottish” for hip hop, so they reinvent themselves as a Californian duo. Against all odds, the ruse works, but how far can you chase a dream built on a lie? An entertaining directorial debut from actor James McAvoy.

This is VOLUNTEERS' WEEK, when we celebrate the exceptional part played by over 90 volunteers in keeping our community cinema open. Volunteers are responsible for every task undertaken at screenings (and certain others behind the scenes), and we're immensely grateful for their skills, dedication and enthusiasm. They are a huge part of what makes the DLC "no ordinary cinema"!

On 26 May, we marked the final shift of volunteer steward Roland Rosser, who has served ever since we reopened the cinema in 2014. He's 93, which shows we don't have an age limit! His earliest memory of seeing a film is 'Sun Valley Serenade' (1941). It has been a privilege having Roland in the team, and we look forward to seeing him in future audiences.
