LAST MEETING - This week we are going to close our seminar series thinking about the idea of thematic/philosophical content in music in the philosophical continental tradition. We are going to focus on Schopenhauer and Adorno’s works with our guest speaker: Andrew Huddleston, Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Warwick.

This week we are going to continue our seminar series thinking about the relationship between music and knowledge. We are going to consider if we can get to know something new through listening to music and if knowledge of music can have an impact on our perception of it.

We are going to consider questions such as: Can knowledge of music impact on what we hear when we listen to music? Can listening to music bring new knowledge to the perceiver?

This week we are going to continue our seminar series thinking about the ability of music to convey emotions. We are going to look at how music expresses emotions with our guest speaker: Maria Zanella, PhD student in the Department of Philosophy, University of Warwick.

We are going to consider questions such as: What do we mean when we say that a piece of music is "sad" or "cheerful"? How does music make listeners happy or sad? And is their becoming so unreasonable?

This week we are going to continue our seminar series thinking about the perception of music. We are going to look at what happens when we listen to music which does not happen when we perceive other type of sounds and auditory entities.

We are going to consider questions such as: What does the perception of music imply? Is the perception of music different or distinctive from the perception of other type of auditory entities?

This week we are going to start our seminar series thinking about what music is. We are going to look at all the features that an auditory something needs to have in order to be considered music.

We are going to consider questions such as: Is music just a series of ordered sounds? Can birds’ songs be music? Can the sound of water running into the sink be music?

Musical Reflections is a seminar series on the Philosophy of Music organized in collaboration with Warwick Arts Centre, Warwick Music Centre and Giulia Lorenzi , Early Career Fellow at Institute of Advanced Study, University of Warwick and Teaching Assistant in the Department of Philosophy, University of Warwick.

This seminar series on the Philosophy of Music aims at introducing participants to some philosophical debates in this area of study and helping them expanding and deepening their reflections on music.

In each meeting we are going to tackle a different philosophical question concerning music. We are going to both see how philosophers have replied to that question and propose our personal reflections on it.

Meetings are going to take place every other Thursday, starting from Thursday the 12th of October, in the National Grid Room (first floor Warwick Arts Centre) at 7pm.
