Today our featured artist is Anne:

“Hi my name is Anne. At school Art was one of my favourite subjects but I progressed no further & took no exams in the subject. On leaving school at 16 years of age I never thought any more about Art except for appreciating good works of art in museums or at local art exhibitions. However, on retirement I joined a local beginners art group & found that my interest for the subject was still there. In June 2024 I visited Fen Edge Festival & came across Cottenham Canvas displaying some of the groups art work along with information about the group. I went along one Monday evening & decided to join. The group is very friendly, approachable, encouraging & supportive. It has given me the confidence to use pastels, charcoals etc which I enjoy although there is still lots of room for improvement.”

One of our featured artists today is David:

“My name is David. I joined Cottenham Canvas almost two years ago, returning to art for the first time since my school days in the 1960s. Since then, I’ve rediscovered a real love for drawing. I work mainly in graphite, charcoal, and colour pencil, and I’ve recently begun exploring oil pastel and soft pastel. I usually work on paper, though I’ve also been experimenting with Pastelmat and sandpaper surfaces.

The members of our Monday evening art group come from all different walks of life and represent a wide range of ages.

We each have our own unique artistic styles and work with a variety of mediums.

The one thing we all have in common is our shared enjoyment of two hours of mindful art-making each week. This time offers space to relax, create, and be fully present in a supportive and welcoming environment.

Last week, Cottenham Canvas hosted our first ever Guest Artist. We were visited by the amazingly talented and friendly local artist, Lucy Bayes.

Lucy gave us a great introduction to her creative world, through relaxed presentation and Q&A, telling us about how she got started and over time discovered her own style. She covered everything from preferred mediums, how she approaches each new piece, working in layers, pushing through a painting's "ugly stage", day-to-day life as a commissioned artist, some of the pitfalls of selling artwork, and more!

She also stressed how she continues to experiment with different techniques and the importance of working with a subject matter she enjoys painting (hares feature a lot in her work, but also some lesser appreciated creatures like badgers).

For our first guest speaker, Lucy really knocked it out of the park! We hope to have many more Guest Artists in future.

Lucy is based in The Corner Studio at Haddenham Arts Centre. If you are in the area I would recommend popping in for a look at some of her work. You can find her on Instagram: lbthecornerstudio or email [email protected]
