Happy 88th birthday Sheila Reid!

Born in Glasgow in 1937, Sheila Reid has built and impressive career that stretches across decades. She was an original member of the Royal National Theatre in the early 1960s, working alongside Laurence Olivier, and quickly became a familiar face on British television through the likes of Z-Cars, Armchair Theatre and Play for Today.

Over the years she’s popped up everywhere – The Sweeney, Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, All Creatures Great and Small, Taggart, Doctor Who, Midsomer Murders and Still Crazy – always dependable, always believable. Film audiences will also remember her from Brazil and The Winter Guest.

For many viewers though, she’ll forever be Madge Harvey in Benidorm. Loud, blunt and unforgettable, it was a late-career role that introduced her to a whole new audience and showed just how sharp her comic timing still was well into her later years.

Away from the screen, she’s continued working in theatre, radio and television, and has supported charities including Plan International. Nearly 65 years into her career, Sheila Reid remains one of those actors who’s simply always been there – part of the fabric of British television.

88 today, and a career that most actors would be proud of at any age!
