Another cracking day in the darkroom. Todays theme was landscape and nature. These were taken during various lockdown periods over the last two years, from my back catalogue of negatives. 10x8 inch silver gelatin prints.

Back in the darkroom after over 2 years out. I have taken so much film covering the Covid period I didn’t quite know where to start. I decided on an architectural theme for today. It was very heartening how quickly all the old skills came back, dodging and burning to my heart’s content. To say I had a great day is an understatement, my heart is beaming. You can’t beat watching a silver gelatin print as it magically appears before your eyes - and they should last 100 years if kept properly.
The exhibition I had planned for 2020 is firmly back on the agenda. 🎞📷🖤🤍

I just love photographing misty scenes on black and white film. Metering can be tricky to judge, with such contrast and low light. As I only had a slow film speed available (Ilford FP4 125) I had to use a technique called ‘pushing’ were you trick your cameras light meter into thinking it has a faster film inside it. This effectively gives you more latitude with the exposure times - but then you have to compensate for this by extending your development times. This can create a more grainy image - but in these conditions I think it adds to the atmosphere. These were taken early yesterday morning in Petts Wood and developed and scanned last night. I can’t wait to be able to get back into the commercial dark room to print them.

Here are a few pictures of Petts Wood in the snow, taken recently on my vintage film camera (these are scans of the negatives). I've also included a few I took in the Autumn whilst walking in the woods. Black and white film has an unmistakeable quality which I don't believe can be duplicated using digital - and you certainly can notice the difference when holding a print from the darkroom versus an ink jet or laser print. Hope you enjoy.

I’ve been out and about in Petts Wood and shot a roll of black and white film. Whilst I’m developing it here are some shots with the IPhone. ❄️

I wonder if we’ll get any of the white stuff in Petts Wood this winter.

Here are a series of my photos that I have set to a piece of music I have written. The words I’m singing are Tibetan Buddhist mantras. Hope you like it 🙏🏼.

My ‘Time Hop’ app showed me a memory from two years ago today. A photo I took in London on black and white film. It seems particularly poignant and symbolic given our current circumstances, the sacrifices people have made and the loss people have faced.
