More Chicago Soul today, Jerry Butler was often referred to as the Godfather of Chicago Soul for good reason, he’s been active since his time with The Impressions from 1958-60 and as a successful solo artist since then. His nickname is The Iceman because of his coolness. Jerry served as a Commissioner for Cook County, Illinois, from 1985 to 2018.
This fabulous track is taken from his 1972 album "The spice of life", listen to the coolness of his delivery on "Stop stepping on my dreams".

"King of the falsetto", Eddie Holman cut some great singles in the 60's & 70's, however this album only track from '77 is up there with the best of his recordings. Taken from his album "A Night To Remember", which was also a sensational single release. On the Salsoul label, "Where have you been all my life"

Phyllis Nelson will always be best remembered for her 1985 chart topper "Move Closer" but prior to that her records were mostly dance oriented, she also recorded numerous records during the disco era. She started out with her family group Nelson Five & later sang backing vocals for Major Harris, she also fronted little known vocal group Brown Sugar, of which there are eight other groups worldwide with the same name! Sadly, she passed away in 1998 at the young age of 47.
This is her taking the lead on this absolute gem from her Brown Sugar, from 1976 "The Game Is Over (What's The Matter With You)".

This photo involves the creators of the Philly sound, Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff. It also happened to be Kenny's 83rd birthday on Tuesday, so a belated Happy Birthday Mr Gamble. Between them they've written and produced 175 gold and platinum records, earning them an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the non-performer category in March 2008. They've written hits for Philly legends including the O'Jays & Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes.
This is one of their early compositions, written for Kenny's former wife Dee Dee Sharp, a club classic on the US Gamble & the iconic UK Action label, from 1968 "What Kind Of Lady".

Ruby Stackhouse from Hollandale, Mississippi, and later moved to Chicago. She was 79 years.
* “Casanova (Your Playing Days Are Over)” (1967) — her biggest hit, reaching No. 9 on the R&B chart.
* “You Made a Believer (Out of Me)” (1969)
* “Everybody Saw You” (1970)
* “JUST LOVING YOU” Her biggest International favourite

This is the track Coffee who made Rubys track into a big hit in the eighties.

Happy Birthday to New York singer-songwriter Patti Austin who celebrates her 76th birthday today. She was born into a musical family with Quincy Jones and Dinah Washington as her godparents and at the age of just 4 years old she made her first performance at the Apollo Theater; as a teenager she recorded commercial jingles and worked as a session singer. Between 1965 and 2011 she's recorded 20 albums and over 50 singles, in 2008 she received a Grammy Award for the Best Jazz Vocal Album, "Avant Gershwin", and in that same s year she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Berklee College of Music.
She recorded this great slab of crossover soul on the Columbia label, from 1972 "Are We Ready For Love".

This photo features the Detroit vocal group The Fantastic Four, who were formed in 1965 by "Sweet James" Epps and sometimes went by the name of Sweet James and The Fantastic Four. They were first signed to Detroit label Ric-Tic until they were bought by Motown in 1968, they had two chart hits, their first release in '67, "The Whole World Is a Stage" which reached No 6 on the Billboard RnB charts and "I Love You Madly" released in '68 on Motown subsidiary Soul. During their time at Ric-Tic they were the labels biggest selling act, even surpassing Edwin Starr, the group's only Motown album, "Best of The Fantastic Four", was released by Motown in 1969. Group leader "Sweet James" Epps sadly passed away in 2000 at the age of just 53.
They recorded this gem during their time at Ric Tic, co-written and produced by Ed Wingate with such fantastic lyrics, from 1967 “Can't Stop Looking For My Baby”.

Another one of those tracks that remarkably didn't get a release back in the day. Recorded in the mid 60's for Stax it was discovered by the guys at London's Kent Records who pressed it and gave it away as a freebie at London's 100 Club anniversary all-nighter in 1991. It became a massive play during the 90's and the original pressing has become an in-demand rarity, nobody's sure who the writers were but the vocals are from the lovely Carla Thomas, "I'll Never Stop Loving You".

Remembering one of the best baritones to ever have graced soul music on his birthday, Chuck Jackson was born on this day in 1937, he sadly passed away in February 2023 at the age of 85. He was one of the first artists to record material by Burt Bacharach and Hal David successfully, including his signature song "Any Day Now", which spent six weeks in the Billboard Top 40 in 1962. He started out as a member of The Del-Vikings in 1957 and signed with Wand Records as a solo artist in 1961, he signed with Motown in 1967 and recorded half a dozen singles for them but was quoted as saying it was "one of the worst mistakes I ever made in my life". In 2015, Chuck was inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame.
He recorded this classy feelgood number on the All Platinum label, from 1975 "I've Got The Need".

The Velours started out as The Troubadours in Brooklyn in 1953, they changed their name in 1956 & had two minor hits. What a lot of people don't know is that they moved to England in 1968, changed their name to The Fantastics & decided to stay, this paid off for them as they had a hit with "Something Old, Something New" which reached No 6 on the UK charts in 1971.
They recorded this classic, which has been a standard on the rare soul scene for decades, on the MGM label, from 1967 "I'm Gonna Change".
