🌸 The latest little addition to A Nimsical Creation is handmade seed packets filled with seeds collected from flowers I’ve grown in my own garden this year. 🐝

At the moment I have poppies in all sorts of gorgeous colours, from huge deep purple blooms to delicate pearly greys, sunny yellows and rich reds. Each little packet is hand-labelled, with tiny flowers and bees drawn on by me. It has taken rather a lot of time, but I think they’ve turned out wonderfully cute. 💜

One little gardening note though: poppies are delightfully unpredictable! They happily cross-pollinate, so the flowers you grow might not be exactly the same colour as the ones on the packet. Personally, I think that’s part of the magic of gardening. Every spring is a surprise. ✨

The seed packets will be available at Sketch & Sip and at the Quirky Eclectica Market for just 50p each.

Simply scatter the seeds onto the surface of the soil before the first frosts, around Halloween is ideal. Don’t bury them, as they need light to germinate. Then let nature do the hard work, and with a little luck they’ll reward you with beautiful poppies in the spring. 🌱
They will also attract pollinators. 🐝🪲🦋

You could even sprinkle a few in a forgotten corner of your neighbourhood and brighten the place up a little. The world could always do with more flowers.

Here’s hoping there are a few fellow garden witches around Carlisle who’ll enjoy giving these a new home. 🌙💜🌿

I spent last night updating my socials, and a recurring thought popped into my head. It’s been bothering me for a while.

When Did Having a Tiny Shop Turn Into Running a Circus?

I have a small, possibly old-fashioned dream.

Not a startup.
Not a brand ecosystem.
Not a “thriving online community hub.”

Just a shop.

A tiny one.

The kind where you make little things with your hands, line them up on a shelf, and people either buy them or they don’t.

That’s it. Transaction complete. Everyone goes home.

Somehow, somewhere along the road, that stopped being enough.

Now, apparently, if you want to sell a pair of handmade earrings, you must also become:
• a content creator
• a social media manager
• a videographer
• a customer engagement specialist
• a brand storyteller
• and part-time dancing raccoon for the algorithm

I blinked and my quiet craft hobby turned into a full production company.

All I wanted to do was pour resin into little moulds and make sparkly dice.

Why do I suddenly need a ring light.

Back in the day (yes, I’m saying it)

A shop used to be beautifully simple.

You made a thing.
You put the thing out.
Someone liked the thing.
They bought it.

No one expected the candlemaker to also host a weekly livestream.

No one demanded the jeweller “build a community.”

No one needed to know the baker’s morning routine or favourite childhood memory before buying a loaf of bread.

You didn’t have to perform your personality as part of the packaging.

You could just… exist.

Quietly.

Gloriously anonymous.

Honestly, that sounds luxurious now.

Now everything has to be a “community”

And I don’t understand when this happened.

Some marketing wizard somewhere decided that nothing can simply be a product anymore. Everything has to be a relationship.

Not customers.
A community.

Not selling.
Engagement.

Not a shop.
A brand journey.

It’s like every small business is expected to host a perpetual house party.

“Come hang out! Join the Discord! Watch my daily videos! Comment! Like! Subscribe! Here’s my life story! Here’s my struggles! Here’s my breakfast!”

I don’t want to host a party.

I just want to sell you a pair of tiny moth earrings and then we both politely disappear into the fog like Victorian ghosts.

Is that so much to ask?

The part that really drains me

It’s not just the extra work.
It’s the emotional labour.

When you’re pushed to be visible all the time, suddenly strangers feel entitled to you.

They don’t just buy your work. They evaluate you.

They critique you.
They compare you.
They demand faster replies.
They ask for discounts.
They want constant access.

If they don’t like something, instead of quietly not buying it, they announce it like you’ve personally wronged them.

And I’m standing there thinking:

You know you can just… not buy the earrings, right?

You are not required to attend this shop.

This is not a group project.

It turns two jobs into one tired person

Crafting is slow and cozy and tactile.

It smells like resin and wax and coffee.
It’s music playing softly and hyperfocusing for hours.
It’s small magic.

Marketing is loud.

Lights. Camera. Algorithms. Trends. Metrics. Engagement graphs.

They don’t even live in the same universe.

Trying to do both at once feels like knitting while someone keeps throwing confetti cannons at your head.

“Be authentic!”
“Post daily!”
“Show your personality!”
“Optimise your reach!”

Please. I am just trying to sand a tiny mushroom pendant.

Let me sand in peace.

Maybe everything doesn’t need to be a community

Here’s my mildly rebellious thought:

Maybe a shop can just be a shop.

Maybe customers don’t need access to my inner life.
Maybe I don’t need to perform friendliness on camera.
Maybe it’s okay if growth is slower and quieter.

Maybe it’s fine to say:

Here’s what I made.
If you like it, lovely.
If you don’t, that’s fine too.

No hard feelings. No content strategy. No circus.

Just objects and humans and a simple exchange.

How wonderfully boring. How wonderfully sane

The life I actually want

I don’t want to be an influencer.

I want a small table at a market.
Little trays of glittering things.
Someone picking up a pair of earrings and smiling.
Coins clinking.
A thank you.
Done.

Then home with a cup of coffe and my cat and the quiet satisfaction of having made something real.

No hashtags required.

That feels like enough.

And honestly, I think it always was.
