This bird wears its crown not of feathers, but of horn.
The Knob-billed Duck (Sarkidiornis melanotos), also known as the Comb Duck, is one of the most unmistakable waterfowl in the world. What sets the male apart is the prominent black “k**b” on top of his bill — a fleshy crest that grows larger during the breeding season, likely to impress potential mates or intimidate rivals.
Native to sub-Saharan Africa, the Indian subcontinent, and Southeast Asia, this duck prefers freshwater wetlands, marshes, and flooded fields. Males are large, with white bodies speckled in black, a shimmering greenish-black back, and a powerful presence in the air. Females lack the bill k**b and are generally smaller with more muted tones — but just as agile in flight.
Despite their duck status, they perch in trees thanks to strong claws and often nest in tree cavities — a rare trait among ducks. Social but also fiercely territorial during breeding, k**b-billed ducks are nomadic, following the rains in search of suitable water bodies.
A bird of contrasts — awkward on land, elegant in water, and regal in the sky.
