The Palace Cinema Broadstairs

The Palace Cinema Broadstairs An independent cinema in Broadstairs for people who love independent film.

60 Years a Cinema 1965-2025 🎈

The Palace is small, welcoming, independent and family-run, offering a programme of quality mainstream, independent and world cinema for locals and visitors alike! It's usually open 7 days a week, offering at least two choices of film plus special events including 'Palace Sunday Silents', monthly silent films with live piano accompaniment Sept-June. The cinema is deceptively small from the street-

front; inside at street level there is a little foyer (with a lovely range of snacks and drinks, and fully licensed) and balcony. Stairs from the foyer lead down to the stalls, and we have step-free access at the rear of the building. The Palace is housed in a lovely Grade II listed building. Originally a shipwrights stood on the site until in the 1910s it was transformed into the more elegant, and solid, 'York Gate Hall' to house the armour collection of Sir Guy Laking, whose family holidayed next door in York Gate House. From the late 1910s-1960s the hall was hired out in the season for puppet shows and 16mm cartoon shows before being converted into a cinema by local cinema entrepreneur Jack Field, who originally named it the 'Windsor'. It was re-named the Palace in 2006 by the third owners, Colin Jay and Sean Mills, who undertook a large scale renovation and installation of larger screen plus digital sound & projection.

In this centenary year, a rare opportunity to see a rediscovered documentary not seen for 50 years including original film of the General Strike 1926.

Exploring the years that had led to the strike, the interviews with those involved give the film legacy as a unique record of an extra ordinary period in British history. We meet the miners at the heart of the strike, for whom it offered a first time to feel their power. We also meet the government officials, the police and the ‘specials’, and the middle-class volunteers in the government-organised Organisation for the Maintenance of Supplies.

These first-hand accounts show working class communities beginning to organise society in their own interests, despite far lower literacy rates and none of today’s tools for communication. Behind the scenes, away from this inspiring and potentially revolutionary action, the TUC General Council found themselves caught in the headlights of a situation they couldn’t control and a government one step ahead of them. Capitulation followed, and a desperate loss and sense of betrayal for the men going back to work and for their families.

The screening is followed by a Q&A with Chris Reeves and Norman Thomas of Platform Films who have brought this film back to the screen.

We're delighted to welcome director Felipe Bustos Sierra for a screening + Q&A, a special event for Refugee Week in partnership with ARK.

In May 2021, a UK Home Office dawn raid triggered one of the most spontaneous and successful acts of civil resistance in recent memory.

In Pollokshields, Glasgow – Scotland’s most diverse neighbourhood - hundreds of residents rushed to the streets to stop the deportation of their neighbours.

Blending crowd-sourced footage with a moving re-enactment featuring verbatim testimony from those who were there, Everybody To Kenmure Street takes us inside the eight-hour stand-off that demonstrated the power of peaceful solidarity.
