Khiyo Khiyo is a British-Bangladeshi band that gives Bengali music a modern London sound. The band is named Khiyo after a letter of the Bengali alphabet.

It is a unique letter that, whilst being a combination of two letters, has an identity of its own. Similarly, though the band members have backgrounds that include Western classical, rock, jazz, blues, Nazrul Sangeet, Bengali folk and Indian classical, the amalgamation of the whole has a singularly identifiable sound.

Sohini and Olly have been running workshops with children in schools across London since 2017. They’re also creating curriculum materials so that children in the borough of Tower Hamlets can learn to play a Bengali folk tune on, say, the oboe. Big thanks to shamimjournalist for covering our work in onlinehyphen.

We’re doing a free gig on Saturday 27th 12-1pm as part of the Chrisp Street Fetival of Britain Celebrations. Free entry, Chrisp Street Market, Market Square E14 6AQ.

Chrisp Street Market was created as a ‘Live Architecture’ exhibition for the 1951 Festival of Britain, a nationwide celebration of British creativity, design, and technology. Unlike many of the festival’s temporary attractions, it was built to last. Seventy-five years on, Chrisp Street Market is still full of life. Traders, residents, and visitors continue to keep it busy, friendly, and welcoming every day. This 75th Celebration is in partnership with The London Festival of Architecture, of which Chrisp Street is an official neighbourhood. The one-day, outdoor event will celebrate the rich heritage, architecture, community and culture of Chrisp Street Market through, performances, exhibitions, talks and guided walks.

FREE talks, performances & workshops celebrating the past, present & future of Chrisp Street.
