She's Here: Meet Ruth Essel 🩰✨
Remember we said we'd reveal a dance therapy pioneer? Here she is!
Ruth Essel — Founder & Artistic Director of Pointe Black — is joining our panel on March 26th.
Ruth's story:
📚 Psychology graduate (BA)
🏥 Former Deputy Programme Manager, Royal College of Psychiatrists
💪 Mental health survivor who uses dance as healing
🩰 Founded Pointe Black (2020) as safe space for Black dancers
👶🏾➡️👵🏾 Serves ages 18 months to 63 years
💷 Offers £5 classes + scholarships (access = equity)
🌍 Wandsworth Black History 365 partner
📺 Featured: CNN, Reuters, BBC
Why Ruth's voice matters:
Ruth doesn't just teach ballet technique. Pointe Black offers dance therapy— understanding that movement is mental health work, safe space is therapeutic intervention, and representation matters for healing.
When older ballerinas come to Pointe Black, they're "healing their inner child." When young Black girls see themselves on stage, that's not just arts access — that's mental health infrastructure.
Ruth brings psychology expertise + Royal College of Psychiatrists credentials + lived experience as mental health survivor. She's the ONLY voice bringing movement/embodiment to a panel otherwise focused on sound and music.
