The Island is a self-funded multi use arts facility and creation centre based in the old police station in Bristol city centre. It hosts a wide variety of creative spaces from circus training, dance and rehearsal rooms, making spaces and artists studios to dark rooms, recording and music production studios, a gallery and a suite of early 20th century police cells. If you want to get involved in a

collaborative showcase event in Bristol then the Island is the place to do it. Like the name suggests, the Island is an isolated centre of creativity and energy located smack bang in the city centre. As a venue, it has so many unique event spaces and a can-do attitude making it ideal for a Bristol event. The Island is part of the Artspace Lifespace project, an artist led initiative that recycles vacant, under-used and problem properties into thriving active creative resources and has been active since 2008.

FREE SCREENING FOR REFUGEE WEEK
A World Not Ours is an intimate, humorous, portrait of three generations of exile in the refugee camp of Ein el-Helweh, in southern Lebanon. Based on a wealth of personal recordings, family archives, and historical footage, the film is a sensitive, and illuminating study of belonging, friendship, and family.
Filmed over more than 20 years by multiple generations of the same family, A World Not Ours is more than just a family portrait; it is an attempt to record what is being forgotten, and mark what should not be erased from collective memory.

HERE AND NOW Exhibition launches 16th June.

Beneath The Surface
13-minute film, 4K | Climate / Ocean Conservation / Documentary

As climate change accelerates, bleaching and reef collapse are no longer distant warnings, but visible signs of a changing ocean. Beneath the Surface translates ocean fever measured in degrees Celsius into the lived temperature of loss felt by coastal communities whose identities are shaped by the sea.

Through the voices of scientists, local fishermen, and conservationists, this work reflects on what it means to witness the slow disappearance of something foundational.

The reef is more than scenery. It is memory, inheritance, protection, and identity.

We’re delighted to host Images of Broken Light Which Dance Before Me, a photographic exhibition by emerging artist Tommy Tetley

Shot over the past three years, Tommy’s work travels from Bristol’s energetic dancefloors to the misty canals of Bath and the diverse landscapes of South America. Developed through traditional darkroom techniques, each handmade silver gelatin print reveals intricate detail, striking contrasts, and moments of light that might otherwise go unnoticed.

The exhibition traces Tommy’s journey as a photographer, beginning within music communities where he first found direction, through his travels abroad, and finally arriving back in Bath, where fleeting weather conditions created a series of atmospheric final images.

Supporting student and emerging artists has always been part of The Island’s story. We are a place to test ideas, take creative risks, develop new work, and share it with the public. Whether it’s a first exhibition or the next step in an evolving practice, we’re proud to provide a space where creativity can grow.

This training covers wrestling fundamentals and will be done on mats not in a wrestling ring.

As it is on a sprung dance floor the training will be done with no shoes on. Please bring a drink as we will be getting ACTIVE!

The workshop will be a safe and inclusive space for everybody so please bring a good attitude! While it is designed for total newcomers, if you have been to the last workshop, you are very welcome along and we'll have some new stuff to try!
