This joint performance brings together two established careers within contemporary folk.

Expect subtle instrumental mastery, evocative songwriting and innovative musicality from Kris Drever & Cahalen Morrison. They play Creative Folkestone Quarterhouse on Friday 19th March.

Kris and Cahalen are the ultimate ‘musician’s musicians’ who draw from diverse musical backgrounds but are friends and kindred spirits in their subtle instrumental mastery, evocative songwriting and innovative musicality.

Both have carved out a unique place and voice at the intersection of traditional folk and modern acoustic music, digging deep into the well of tradition – those of Scotland and America respectively – whilst pushing the boundaries of intelligent and poignant contemporary songwriting.

Kris Drever is among Scotland’s most acclaimed and distinctive contemporary musicians, celebrated for his warm voice, virtuosically expressive guitar playing and imaginative songwriting. Raised in the Orkney Islands, Drever is a renowned
innovator as a solo artist and as one third of the award-winning trio Lau.

Now resident in Scotland, but hailing from the high desert of Northern New Mexico, Cahalen Morrison is equally at home on guitar, banjo, mandolin, and is a captivating singer, whether in three-part harmony or unaccompanied, and an insightful and poetic wordsmith and songwriter.

Both artists will be releasing powerful new albums in 2026: Kris’ 𝘋𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦 and Cahalen’s 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘳𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘯 𝘉𝘦𝘭𝘭.

Music to soothe the troubled soul - for fans of The Beta Band, Tunng and Boards Of Canada.

Departure Lounge + special guests play The Rose Hill on Saturday 12th December

Departure Lounge return to Brighton, one of their spiritual homes (the other is Nashville) for a special headline show at The Rose Hill on Saturday 12th December. They'll be showing off tracks from their forthcoming album, Field Conditions and upgraded versions of old favourites, as well as songs from 2021's Transmeridian, including the single, Australia, which featured R.E.M.'s Peter Buck on guitar.

The four-piece recording line-up of Chris Anderson (aka Crayola Lectern), Simon Edwards, Lindsay Jamieson and Tim Keegan will be augmented by Tim's son Quincy.

"These four friends from different musical backgrounds came together originally with the stated aim of ‘creating music to soothe the troubled soul’. Citing influences including Robert Wyatt, Nick Drake, Talk Talk, Lou Reed, Arvo Pärt and Cocteau Twins, the band’s diverse tastes are reflected in the music they create.
Departure Lounge could be said to embody a lost age of reflective, experimental pop music which came to the fore at the turn of the millennium with The Beta Band, Tunng, Boards Of Canada and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci." (Matt Lockett, Violette Records).

A master of roots traditions aligned with contemporary folk.

His most recent album, 2025's Songs for Nina and Johanna, is a collection of duets with Nina Persson of The Cardigans and Johanna of First Aid Kit. This earned James and Nina a slot on Later... James's most recent novel, ‘Callum, Reine, Sylvie and Sparrow’, is a fragmentary novel by James Yorkston. Nine interwoven fictional tales involving Callum, a journalist and musician, alongside his friends, lovers and family. Includes: Music, travel, lochs, love, despair, st*****rs, football, antiquarian books, Scotland, Ireland, goodies and baddies and everything else that matters in the world.

James was an integral original member of the much lauded and hugely influential Fence Collective (King Creosote, Pictish Trail, KT Tunstall, Beta Band etc) and his style shows a mastery of folk traditions, often drawing on traditional songs, which has seen him collaborate with such heritage artists as the Waterson family, Martin Carthy and the late Bert Jansch, whilst producing his own albums alongside contemporary artists such as Four Tet, Rustin Man, David Wrench and Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip).

Post-folk with elements of jazz, post-rock and chamber classical music.

Spafford Campbell are twenty-something mould-breakers: fiddle player Owen Spafford and guitarist Louis Campbell.

They play The Greys (+ special guests) on Monday 30th November.

The two first met as teenagers playing traditional music. The connection, they say, was immediate. The duo Spafford Campbell began playing live in 2018, prompting double takes with their delicacy, dynamism and seemingly telepathic exchanges, with the startling intimacy of musical conversations nurtured in improv-led writing sessions.

Their latest album Tomorrow Held is a visionary body of eight largely instrumental tracks that hold space, resolve into mystery, that fold in elements of jazz, post-rock and chamber classical music while raiding the folk music toolbox. Call it what you want: post-folk. Trad-noir. Folk nihilism.

While redolent of Talk Talk’s moody, experimental 1988 opus Spirit of Eden, and riven with a Bon Iver-ish sense of transcendence, Tomorrow Held is a work of bold singularity.

Melting Vinyl & CINECITY presents:
The Phantom Of The Opera (1925) with live score written and performed by Andrew Wasylyk & Tommy Perman at Fabrica gallery Brighton on Friday 13th November.

For this very special screening and performance, Scottish composers Andrew Wasylyk and Tommy Perman have created a new haunting and dramatic score befitting this silent-era classic.
There's is very much a present-day approach, navigating opera, neo-classical, acoustic and electronic instruments with elements of sound design.

Having released their first collaborative album, ‘Ash Grey And The Gull Glides On’, in 2024 to critical acclaim and a Scottish Album Of The Year Award nomination, the pair come together once more to celebrate an iconic piece of cinema history through their new accompanying soundtrack album, ‘House With A Curse’.

One of the earliest horror masterpieces, 1925’s ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ is the first film adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel and ranks among the greatest horror films of the silent era. Filled with opulent costumes, extravagant sets and hundreds of extras, the film made dazzling early use of Technicolour.

Andrew Wasylyk & Tommy Perman – ‘House With A Curse’ is out on Friday 16th October on Clay Pipe Music.
Copies of the album will be available on the evening.

Swirling guitars, otherworldly drones, fuzzed-out pop melodies...

L*D and the Search for God + special guests play Komedia Brighton on Sunday 11th October.

L*D and the Search for God hit the Northern California coast in 2005, seemingly from another place and time, dosing San Francisco with hypnotic shows built on swirling guitars, otherworldly drones, fuzzed-out pop melodies, and dreamy vocal harmonies.

Early shows and recordings drew comparisons to My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Yo La Tengo, Spacemen 3, and Sonic Youth, helping the band quickly earn a reputation as a must-see act within the Northern California underground shoegaze and psych scene.

Their self-titled debut EP (Mind Expansion Records, 2007; Don Giovanni, 2025) sold out before its official release date, earned critical acclaim, and continues to appear on lists of essential shoegaze releases.

Paying homage to the original Penguin Cafe Orchestra music...
with a beguiling blend of melodic instrumental pop absorbing influences of folk, minimalism, and world music.

Penguin Cafe: Performs Music From The Penguin Cafe Orchestra
at Creative Folkestone on Friday 6th November.

Penguin Cafe was founded by Arthur Jeffes in 2009, bringing together a talented and disparate group of musicians initially to perform his father Simon Jeffes’ legacy of world-renowned PCO music, ten years after his untimely death in 1997. Arthur, a talented composer in his own right, quickly began to create new and unique genre-defying music, blending classical instruments like violins and cellos with unexpected elements like ukuleles and melodicas, the spellbinding philosophy of the Penguin Cafe always in his mind.

Penguin Cafe have released five studio albums of original music, four of which are released on Erased Tapes Records.

The current show ‘Penguin Cafe performs Music from the Penguin Cafe Orchestra’ pays homage to the original PCO music featuring performances of classic compositions that have been captivating listeners for decades. Audiences can expect to hear beloved works like ‘Music from a Found Harmonium’ and ‘Perpetuum Mobile’ delivered with the ensemble’s signature warmth and inventiveness. This tour not only celebrates the enduring legacy of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra but also showcases the continued evolution of their sound under Arthur Jeffes direction. To commemorate the tour Universal Music has re-released all of the original PCO albums on limited edition Vinyl, and the original iconic PCO album cover paintings by Emily Young are available to own as limited edition art prints for the first time.

Outside of Penguin Cafe, Arthur’s composition work has included several shorts and commissions. He worked with Greenpeace and Aardman Animations to compose the soundtrack for Turtle Journey, released in 2020 to high acclaim, to promote the Greenpeace ‘Protect the Ocean’ campaign.

A minimal yet dramatic soundscape driven by finger-picked guitar and gritty cello playing.

Lemoncello + special guests play The Folklore Rooms on Friday 16th October.

It’s hard not to feel seen by Lemoncello, a band whose live performances and recordings shimmer with the tones of modern Ireland. Their upcoming release, Perfect Place, evolves from the band’s folk-soaked roots and confidently explores intricate new shapes. Marking a bold new chapter for singer-songwriter Laura Quirke & cellist-arranger Claire Kinsella, “𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦” is imbued with assuredness, featuring full-band recordings that weave synths and electronic percussion into the band’s staple organic sound.

Through an intimate and devastatingly personal style of storytelling, the new album reflects upon the modern tension between togetherness and alienation and the chaos of human nature with radical acceptance and compassion. Perfect Place follows on from the band’s debut self-titled record, which received critical acclaim from BBC Radio 6 Music, Clash, and The Line Of Best Fit. Described as “direct and refreshing”, and “cathartic” by critics at Mojo and RNR, the duo speak to listeners in the way that an ex or an old friend might – cultivating a sense of consolation that leaves audiences forgetting there’s a world outside of the venue. Lemoncello’s body of work is equally familiar and confronting, driven by the palpable chemistry of a long-term friendship.
