Brighton, but not quite as you know it 🙌

Let’s talk about editing.

My photos aren’t supposed to look like real life. They’re heavily stylised, and that’s entirely intentional.

But editing is only half the photograph.

The other half happens out on the streets. Finding those little pockets of light, looking for interesting scenes and figuring out how to use the darkness to my advantage.

I often know roughly how I want an image to look before I’ve even pressed the shutter.

Then comes the editing. Deep blacks, exaggerated contrast, selective light and colour. Taking what’s already there and pushing it towards something that feels more like a frame from a film.

Neither part really works without the other.

You can’t rely on editing to do all the work, but you don’t have to limit yourself to what the camera captured either.

That’s the balance I enjoy. Finding something in the real world and turning it into something that feels a little less real. 🙌

I’ve got a bit of an obsession with old telephone boxes. 📞🖤

There’s something about them that gives me a proper nostalgia kick. A reminder of a time before everyone had a phone in their pocket.

I often wonder how much longer they’ll be around. At some point they’ll disappear completely, and we probably won’t even realise we’ve seen the last one.

That’s another thing I love about photography. Capturing the ordinary things that might not be around forever.

Anyway, here’s another lonely telephone box and a few more Brighton nights. 😂

I’ve photographed Brighton more times than I can count.

You’d think I’d have run out of things to photograph by now. 😂

But I think that’s part of what I love about street photography. You can walk the same streets hundreds of times and still come home with something completely different.

The place hasn’t necessarily changed. Maybe the way you’re looking at it has.

My easy go-to for vertical compositions 📐

Find the lines first, then wait for the person.

I’m looking for stairs, tunnels, handrails, lights or architecture that naturally pull your eye towards one point. I’ll centre myself up, build the frame, then wait for someone to walk into the right spot.

I also love exposing for the highlights and letting the shadows get DARK. It removes distractions and makes the person feel isolated in the frame.

A few things I’m thinking about:

• Find the composition before the subject (mostly)
• Use leading lines to decide where you want the person
• Wait. Don’t chase people around 😂
• Expose for the light and don’t be scared of clipped shadows
• Keep moving slightly until everything lines up
• Take plenty of frames. Timing matters.

Once you start seeing compositions like this, you’ll find them everywhere. 🙌
