Golden Mung Dal Pancakes 🥞✨
Light, grounding, and easy on digestion
Looking for a morning meal that leaves you energized without the food coma? These savoury mung dal pancakes (traditionally known as chilla) are naturally gluten-free, rich in plant protein, and known in Ayurvedic cooking for being gentle on the gut and calming for the mind.
Quick Details
Serves: 2 (makes ~4–5 thick pancakes or 8–10 mini pancakes)
Prep Time: 5 mins (plus soaking)
Cook Time: 15 mins
Ingredients
1 cup split mung dal (yellow mung lentils)
1 tsp freshly ground roasted cumin seeds
½ tsp turmeric powder
Himalayan pink rock salt (to taste)
3 tbsp ghee (for cooking)
Water (just enough to blend)
How to Make It
1. Soak the Dal
Rinse the mung dal thoroughly until the water runs clear. Cover with water (about 1 inch above the lentils) and soak overnight, or for at least 3 hours. Drain and give it one final rinse.
2. Blend the Batter
Transfer the soaked dal to a blender. Add water gradually—using as little as possible—and blend until smooth and the texture resembles standard pancake batter. Add the ground cumin, turmeric, and pink salt, then pulse briefly to combine.
3. Cook in Ghee
Melt a spoonful of ghee in a skillet over medium heat. Pour in a ladle of batter and gently spread it outward in circles.
4. Flip & Crisp
Cook for about 5 minutes, until the edges lift and the underside turns golden-brown. Flip, add a drizzle of ghee around the sides, and cook the other side for another 5 minutes until crisp and cooked through. Repeat with the remaining batter!
Serve with: Fresh cilantro-mint chutney, warm herbal tea, or a side of steamed greens for a grounding breakfast, hearty brunch/lunch with a bowl of mung dal soup and crispy salad 🌱✨🦶

Stepping into the unknown and saying YES to the Loom and what scares you. ✨
This year, turning 60 as a Fire Horse, I promised myself I would stop playing small and lean straight into the things that terrify me.
So when the editor of Witches Magazine asked me to write the tarot column, my immediate gut reaction was: “I don’t do tarot! It scares me!” I read rooms, I read energy, I read people—but tarot was a boundary I had never crossed.
Still, a promise is a promise. I agreed, determined to do it my way.
Then came the Autumn issue. In the middle of a scorching summer heatwave, a mysterious box arrived on my doorstep from the US—featuring a vampire deck! Talk about facing childhood fears head-on. But right when I was wondering how on earth I could channel autumn during 30-degree weather, an eerie, pea-soup mist rolled in out of nowhere, cutting through the heat.
My husband, the dog, and I set off into the mist to find an old roofless chapel tucked away deep by the water. Guided by intuition (and a few wrong turns along the trail!), we found that quiet, sacred space.
Sitting among the ruins, I looked at those dark, bloody cards and chose to see them through my own lensomy lens: turning fear into light, perspective, and genuine hope. When the feedback arrived, the editor told me it brought hope for the future. That’s all I could ever wish for.
Often, the things we fear most hold the exact medicine we need. When we lean into the mist, trust ourselves, and show up authentically, the path reveals itself.
Copies of Witches Magazine are now available at the farm shop—so whether you’re popping in for local eggs, fresh bread, or a little seasonal inspiration, you can pick up a copy in a place that feels comfortable, safe, and welcoming.
Have you said "yes" to something that frightened you lately?

Soothe Your Soul with a Bowl of Lensomy Mung Dal Soup

By Lucinda, The Lensomy Lifestylist Specially written for Modbury Farm Shop Serves: 2–3

A Note from Lucinda

There is truly nothing quite like a warm, loving bowl of dal on those days when you need pure soul food. Light, gentle on digestion, and deeply restorative, mung dal is one of the kindest gifts you can give your body.

This soup is especially great if you are feeling the shift of the season, or when your immune system is compromised or working hard. Whether enjoyed as a light, cleansing broth or made richer with nourishing farm-fresh bone broth, this recipe is full of lensomy—unconditional love and heartfelt care.

Ingredients

1 cup yellow split mung dal (or whole green mung dal / red lentils)
½ tsp ground turmeric
To taste: Himalayan pink rock salt
2 tsp ghee (or coconut oil)
½ tsp whole cumin seeds
1 medium onion, finely chopped (optional)
Fresh coriander (cilantro), chopped, for serving (optional)
Liquid: Fresh water for soaking and cooking, plus warm water or rich bone broth for loosening and topping up
Method

Rinse & Soak Rinse and drain the mung dal thoroughly. Place in a medium bowl, cover with water by about 1 inch (2.5 cm), and soak for 3 to 4 hours or overnight. Drain and rinse once more before cooking.
Simmer to Softness In a medium pot, combine the soaked dal, turmeric, and pink rock salt to taste. Add enough water to cover the dal by about 1 inch (2.5 cm) and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer gently for 25 to 30 minutes, until the lentils are completely soft, creamy, and pasta-like.
Topping Up: Once the dal is tender, stir in extra warm water or nourishing bone broth to achieve your preferred soup consistency—whether you like it light and sippable or thick and comforting.
Temper the Aromatics (Tarka) While the dal is finishing, gently heat the ghee in a small skillet over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and swirl them around until toasted and fragrant. Stir in the chopped onions (if using) and sauté for 5 to 10 minutes until soft, sweet, and lightly golden.
Combine with Care Pour the spiced ghee and golden onions directly into the simmering dal, stirring gently so all the warmth and flavour meld together. Ladle into your favourite warm bowls and finish with a scattering of fresh chopped coriander.
Lucinda’s Serving Touches

Add Farm Shop Veg: Toss in a handful of tender leafy greens (spinach or chard) or seasonal garden veg during the last few minutes of simmering.
Serve Simply: Delicious on its own as a soothing broth, or paired with fluffy basmati rice, warm flatbreads, or crusty sourdough from the farm shop.

A simple bedtime tip: why sleeping on your left side helps your body rest and reset. 🌙✨
How you position your body while resting makes a huge difference in how you feel the next day.
Here is what your body naturally prefers and why:
1. Left-Side Sleeping (The Best Choice) 🌿
Your stomach naturally curves toward the left side of your body. Resting on your left lets gravity do the hard work for you instead of fighting it overnight.
Taking a few moments to rest on your left side after a meal helps food settle easily.
It eases digestion and supports your body’s natural nightly cleansing process—a simple habit backed by modern science today.
2. Sleeping Flat on Your Back
This can slow down your digestion and leave you feeling sluggish or heavy by morning, especially if you already struggle with congestion or bloating.
3. Sleeping on Your Stomach (The Hardest on the Body)
Lying face down puts pressure on your chest and restricts full, deep breathing. Instead of waking up refreshed, it often leaves you feeling tight and tired.
Try it tonight:
After dinner or when you climb into bed, try turning onto your left side. It is a tiny, effortless shift that your digestion will genuinely thank you for. 💛
