When you look at the human side of why people flee, every story is different. But they all share one painful truth: home is no longer safe.

No one leaves everything behind overnight for fun. People only run when staying at home becomes more dangerous than running into the unknown.

The danger looks different for everyone:

War: Fleeing bombs and violence in a country at war.

Domestic Abuse: Running away from a violent partner because the home itself is dangerous.

Bullying & Persecution: Escaping constant threats and cruelty that make life unlivable.

Financial Collapse: Leaving when there is absolutely no food, money, or future left for your children.

If you are lucky enough to have never experienced the terror of having to flee, it can be hard to truly understand. But please know this: whether someone is running from a war zone or a violent household, the fear is exactly the same.

Leaving isn't a choice. It is a fight to survive.

People seeking asylum are legally banned from working or driving, cannot claim standard welfare benefits, are blocked from standard university funding, have no choice over where they are housed, and are barred from opening a regular bank account.

Don't forget our Displaced People Service will be at venues across the county to talk about the support available to refugees and people seeking asylum in Somerset for !

โ€œ Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. " Nelson Mandela (2003)
Life in Mandela's South Africa has been an unrelenting struggle between utopian hope - and painful reality. Three school students, aided by their teachers, want to join the success story this country was meant to become, post-Apartheid. They strive for recognition, dream of their place within a society, meant to work for all. Their dissimilar backgrounds and battles illustrate why Mandela's vision never materialised and is still, a haunting and illusive rainbow.

The award-winning documentary EQUAL PLAY explores the transformative power of sports for disabled people through the stories of two British children. Marley discovers his confidence in boxing, and Tammy is inspired by a Paralympic star to explore wheelchair racing.
Both of them face discrimination in their access to sports and physical education, and the film follows their fight against these systemic barriers. By capturing the nuanced joy and empowerment that sport brings to disabled individuals, EQUAL PLAY highlights the positive change that inclusion can create.
