🎂🎉 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO OUR AMAZING AMY! 🎉🎂

Today we’re celebrating someone who has become such an important part of the Exotic Explorers family. ❤️

Amy originally joined us as a volunteer while studying Animal Management, and what started as volunteering quickly became so much more. Through her hard work, passion and genuine love for the animals, Amy has grown into an incredibly important member of our team — and we honestly couldn’t imagine Exotic Explorers without her! 🥰

Whatever Amy does, she puts her whole heart into it. Whether she’s caring for the animals, assisting us at events, learning, helping behind the scenes or simply getting stuck in wherever she’s needed, she gives everything 100%. 🐍🦉🦎❤️

It has been amazing watching her grow in confidence and knowledge, and seeing her become such a fantastic animal carer and valued member of our team. We’re incredibly proud to have her as part of the Exotic Explorers family. ❤️

So please join all of us in wishing our amazing Amy the HAPPIEST BIRTHDAY! 🥳🎂

🦎💚 HAPPY INTERNATIONAL IGUANA AWARENESS DAY! 💚🦎

Today we’re celebrating some truly incredible reptiles! We are incredibly lucky at Exotic Explorers to have two amazing iguana species as part of our animal ambassador family — the iconic Green Iguana and our incredibly special Lau Banded Iguanas, which are Critically Endangered. 🌿

🌿 GREEN IGUANA 🌿
One of the most recognisable lizards in the world, Green Iguanas can grow to an impressive 1.5–2 metres long, with their long tail making up a huge part of their overall length!

Despite their name, they aren’t always green — their colour can vary from green and brown through to greyish shades depending on age, mood and location.

🦎 They are excellent climbers and spend much of their time high in trees.
🌱 They are primarily herbivorous, feeding on leaves, flowers and fruit.
☀️ Like all reptiles, they rely on their environment to regulate their body temperature.
💚 They have a distinctive row of spines running down their back and a large dewlap underneath their chin.

🌴 LAU BANDED IGUANAS 🌴
Now for one of the really special species we are lucky enough to work with!

Lau Banded Iguanas are native to the Lau Islands of Fiji and are considered Critically Endangered in the wild. Their beautiful banded pattern makes them absolutely stunning, but sadly their future in the wild is far less certain.

🌿 They are primarily herbivorous.
🌴 They are strongly arboreal, spending lots of time in trees and vegetation.
🇫🇯 They are found naturally only in Fiji.
⚠️ They face threats including habitat loss and introduced predators.

Having species like these as ambassadors gives us a fantastic opportunity to educate people about the incredible diversity of reptiles and, importantly, the conservation challenges many species face.

🦎 IGUANA FACTS! 🦎

Did you know?

✨ Iguanas have a parietal eye, sometimes called a “third eye”, which can detect changes in light and helps with things like predator awareness and regulating their daily rhythms.

✨ Many iguanas have incredibly powerful tails which can be used as a defence mechanism.

✨ Their sharp claws and strong limbs make them fantastic climbers.

✨ Iguanas belong to the family Iguanidae, which contains a fascinating variety of species.

✨ And despite their prehistoric appearance, iguanas are incredibly well adapted to their environments!

We absolutely love showing people that reptiles aren’t scary or boring — they are intelligent, fascinating and incredibly important animals. 💚

💔 Goodbye our beautiful Socrates. 💔

We honestly don’t know how to write this.

Today we lost our amazing Great Grey Owl, Socrates. He seemed not himself on Saturday evening and, so suddenly, we have had to say goodbye to one of the most incredible animals we have ever had the privilege of knowing.

There are no words to explain how heartbroken we are.

Soc was Soc. He had the biggest character and the most amazing personality. He was loving, gentle and so incredibly special. He was a favourite with so many of us here at Exotic Explorers, and with so many of the people lucky enough to meet him at our events. ❤️

But to us, he was so much more than an ambassador.

He was family.

One of the most beautiful things about Soc was his relationship with our gorgeous snowy owl, Neve. 🦉❤️ Soc was raised alongside our beautiful Twyla, our Black Barn Owl, but when he moved outside and met Neve, they simply chose each other. They became companions and have been together ever since.

They were each other’s birds. ❤️

Our hearts break knowing Neve has now lost her best friend too. 💔

This is the worst part of keeping animals. We spend every day caring for them, worrying about them, loving them and making memories with them. They become such a huge part of our lives that when they are suddenly gone, the emptiness is impossible to describe.

It hurts. So much.

But amongst all the sadness, we are incredibly grateful that Socrates was ours. Grateful for every cuddle, every look, every silly moment, every event and every memory.

We will miss you every single day, Soc.

There will only ever be one Socrates. ❤️

You were loved more than you could ever have known, by all of us and by so many people whose lives you touched.

Fly high, our beautiful boy. 🦉🌈

We love you. Always. ❤️

🦔💚 A VERY special virtual visit! 💚🦔

We had such a lovely time last night joining the Arlert Media team virtually! 🥰

They got to meet some of our amazing animal ambassadors and learn all about the incredible species we work with. But there was one ambassador in particular who caused quite a bit of excitement… Wilson, our Southern three-banded armadillo! 🦔

Why Wilson? Well, one of Arlert Media’s mascots is a nine-banded armadillo, so it was extra special for them to meet one of his armadillo relatives! 🥹❤️

And as if meeting Wilson wasn’t exciting enough, the lovely team even sent us some absolutely adorable plush versions of their nine-banded armadillo mascot! 🧸🦔

So now we have a very important question…

WHO DO WE THINK IS CUTER?! 😂😍

Wilson definitely thinks he has some serious competition!

⚡🦎 LOOK AT THE SPEED OF THESE GUYS! 🦎⚡

We’ve just fed our three spiny-tailed monitors — Caraxes, Moondancer and Morning — and as you can see, these little Australian predators are FAST! 😳💨

Also known as Ackie monitors, spiny-tailed monitors (Varanus acanthurus) are small but incredibly active members of the monitor family. Despite their size, they have all the characteristics you’d expect from a monitor — intelligence, curiosity, powerful claws and a fantastic feeding response! 🦎

🌏 Species facts:
🔸 Ackies are native to the arid regions of Australia, where they live in rocky and sandy habitats.
🔸 They are primarily insectivores, hunting insects and other small animals, although they can take a wide variety of small prey.
🔸 Their long, muscular tails are covered in spiny scales, helping protect them from predators.
🔸 They are fantastic diggers and spend lots of time in burrows, which provide shelter from Australia’s extreme temperatures.
🔸 Like other monitors, Ackies have a long, forked tongue which they use to collect chemical information from their environment.
🔸 They are incredibly alert and use their speed and agility to catch prey — just look at Caraxes, Moondancer and Morning in action! 👀
🔸 Although they are one of the smaller monitor species, they are still highly intelligent, active reptiles with plenty of personality.

Watching these three hunt is a brilliant reminder that you don’t have to be huge to be an impressive predator! 🥰

🐸 Barry’s Bath Time! 💦

Barry our Giant African Bullfrog has been enjoying a lovely soak today! 🐸💚 There’s nothing quite like a nice bath when you’re a big, chunky frog!

But did you know there’s much more to these incredible amphibians than their enormous appetites and grumpy-looking faces?

🌍 Giant African bullfrogs (Pyxicephalus adspersus) are native to parts of sub-Saharan Africa and are one of the largest frogs in the world.

🐸 They are BIG! Males can reach around 20–25cm in body length, with females generally being smaller. Their powerful bodies and huge mouths make them impressive predators!

🍽️ They’re opportunistic eaters. Giant African bullfrogs will eat a huge variety of prey, including insects, other amphibians, small reptiles and even small mammals. They really aren’t fussy!

💧 Water is important. Like other amphibians, they absorb water through their skin, so access to suitable clean water is an important part of their care. Barry clearly knows how to make the most of his!

☀️ They’re built for seasonal conditions. During dry periods, Giant African bullfrogs can burrow underground and enter a state of dormancy called aestivation, allowing them to survive until the rains return.

👶 Their breeding behaviour is amazing too! When the rains arrive, males call to attract females and breeding takes place in temporary pools and water bodies.

And despite their fierce appearance, Barry is a fantastic ambassador for his species, helping us teach people about these incredible African amphibians. 💚🐸
