Access & Aesthetic is a partnership project exploring promising practices and exploring techniques that we can use within the arts & disability sector. The project is coordinated by Headway Arts, with partners ACCAC Finland - Esteetön taide ja kulttuuri ry (Finland), Nöjesfabriken i Skellefteå (Sweden) and VOARTE (Portugal).

A&A is co-funded by the Erasmus Plus programme of the European Union.

We finally met again and made our work in fantastic Finland and then amazing UK.

Some writing to bring it all together. This is our staring point for our improvisations this week inspired by our journey so far:

We came to the sun
The sun gave us warmth for our first meeting
We reached out our hands
To discover each other
We stretched out to make contact with each other with our different bodies in all shapes and sizes
In beautiful Lisboa

We came to the ice
Hygge in the Nordic night snuggled in our Snoods. Stomped in Swedish snow boots.
We met by the fireside and cooked in the open. We told a story we all knew about friendship and family, and Fighting Evil and envy. Happy ever after.

Covid times: A shadow fell on the world. A strange disease we all tried to understand. Coughing, vulnerable people dying, fear and loneliness. We reached out and supported each other.

We waited 2 years until we met again until we could touch and breathe and be all together

We came to the forest city. Beside the rapids. We smelled the trees in the air In the land of the midnight sun Suomi Finland
We discovered our inner clown and laughed and clowned together.

We came to the land of castles
On the edge of England on the border of Scotland. We danced and sang and learned to fly. We made our own castles of light, our lanterns. And our final performance:

‘Our hearts are more the same than different’

Thanks to all who gave their full hearted comittment to our project and who came to see our show.

We learned and exchanged so much we will take into the future. It is just the start! Many seeds are planted and growing already..

The full report will be published soon.

It was so lovely not to have to walk up the hill when we went sledging with our Swedish hosts.
The travelator was fabulous.

Beth, from the UK team, really loved the warm up this morning.
Seriously, it’s really important to do this as a part of any morning. It energises and relaxes you at the same time.
It’s nice to see this happening in all the countries.

Bye bye Bruno, it’s been great seeing you again. Safe journey home. Until the next time 😀😀😀

The project is all about discussions around access and aesthetic today, particularly using sign and audio description and how we can make these accessible to all.
Each week we spend together, we have a manager’s meeting to share our ideas, experiences, knowledge and feedback from our participants. +

We will soon be sharing some of the things that we have learnt over the last couple of days, but tonight, we are sharing something very special.

Well done Allie, Bruno, Fran, Erik and everyone who took a winter bath in the river this evening. Thank you to those who agreed to their photos being shared.

Please note, no one was harmed in this activity and they’ve all said they felt invigorated when they came out.

The UK team may be adopting cold showers when they get back.

Look at all the hats. So lovely against the snowy background. This is our tour of Skelleftea this afternoon.

Today some of us are going to be very brave and go for a winter bath. For the Swedish and Finnish group, this may be a normal thing, but for the UK and Portuguese.... brrrrrr.
It’s a purely voluntary and I’m sure the early lunch drink afterwards will taste even better after our lovely walk. It’s so nice hearing the crunch of the snow beneath our feet, the children playing in school and some history of the local area.
We all have matching hats too, a lovely gift from our Swedish hosts.

Let’s look at the week ahead and what our Swedish hosts have planned for us.

Learning current and new techniques in audio description exploring how these can be embedded within performance. Learning how to construct a script with imagery at the centre. Techniques for setting context within a performance using nonvisual techniques. The activity will be led by the staff of Nojesfabriken (Sweden) and will work over 5 days to produce a piece of theatre created by participants that incorporates all the elements of the learning.

Throughout the activity the processes will be explored and developed and evaluated with best practice identified.

Goals: to enable the project workers to learn techniques for using audio description to enable access within performance, identify and develop best practice in making theatre work with learning disabled people and how this can be made more accessible.

Results: enhancement of opportunity for learning disabled artists within the partners' own organisations; increased awareness of the benefits of access and quality.

Our European teams have come together and the first task of the day is to introduce ourselves to each other.
