Great Scots of Brum - James Watt

James Watt (1736–1819)

Born in Greenock, James Watt earned the title “Father of the Industrial Revolution” after settling in Birmingham, where he transformed steam engine design and played a key role in the city’s industrial growth. His groundbreaking innovations laid the foundation for modern mechanical engineering.

Teaming up with Birmingham entrepreneur Matthew Boulton, he co-founded the firm Boulton & Watt, which produced and distributed steam engines across the globe.

Watt’s legacy is so impactful that the unit of power, the watt, bears his name
