Mills is an artist and curator based in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Working across painting, collage, print and mixed media, her practice explores control: how it is exercised through class, politics, family histories and cultural symbols, and how it becomes internalised in everyday life.

Mills has her studio in the back rooms of Jackal Art Space on Hide Hill - marked as Venue 18 on the Berwick Open Studios Map; where visitors will also be able to discover Phil Rowe’s paintings, drawings and illustrations.

Visitors to Jackal can expect to see work examining the visible and invisible forces that influence how we see ourselves and others, questioning systems of power often accepted as natural.

“In 2023, after six years in the USA, Mills returned to the UK and settled in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Since arriving she has established both a pop-up art space and, later, Jackal, an independent art space supporting contemporary visual art, exhibitions and creative projects. Recent initiatives include the Women Making Art Reading Room, bringing Open Print Press to Northumberland for the first time, and curating the successful Pieces of Mind exhibition, which is now preparing to tour nationally.

Alongside her curatorial work, Mills continues to develop her own practice. Recent exhibitions include Hundred Heroines Museum, Oxford University Press, and Newcastle Contemporary Art. Her current work explores ideas of control through painting, collage and print."

Tidekettle was founded in 2018 to showcase the versatility of handmade paper as both a surface and a medium for creativity.

They make paper for artists and makers, and take commissions. They feature the work of select local artists including Wee Blue Press, Penny Cuthbert and Trigger Press.

They work with businesses, organisations and individuals to recycle their waste into new paper. They make art including letterpress printed cards, artists’ books and framed works.

Current and recent projects include Our Wic with Lucy J. Wright and Create Berwick, The Present Page journalling workshops with Berwick Literary Festival and researching local plants for papermaking supported by Connecting Threads, as well as holding workshops at their inaugural Tweed River Festival. Berwick is buzzing with creativity!

Tidekettle Paper is on the map as Venue 17 on Bridge Street; and will be open during both weekends of open studios.

Condottieri Glass have been designing and manufacturing stained glass ('leaded-light') panels for over 30 years. They work on original bespoke pieces, as well as undertaking repair and restoration projects on existing glass panels.

Their workshop is one unit within a 4-business building, which includes other artisans - a brewery and stone-carvers. Ideas from clients are encouraged, as they always want customers to have as much connection with the finished piece as possible.

Condottieri Glass can be found at Venue 24 - Meantime Workshops in Spittal - over both weekends of the Berwick Open Studios.

Tweed Bridge Artists are a group of Artists who come together weekly to paint in a variety of media, subject and style. Artists include; Jean Standing, Jo Lloyd, Chris Morrison, Kathy Merrett, Nicky Ewing and Sherill Shariffa.

"Tweed Bridge Artists are the combined creative force of two weekly art classes based in Berwick. Headed by Chris Morrison, the classes have run for the last three years on Tuesday evenings and Friday mornings. Originally set up to enable novice artists to learn the ropes, the two groups now made up of both beginners, and many talented artists who have grown in ability and confidence over the years."

Venue 6 is upstairs at Soul Kitchen - a Berwick-based charity which, when supplies are available, uses food donated by local supermarkets to cook delicious snacks and meals. This is food which would otherwise go to waste as it nears the end of its usable shelf life. In this way Soul Kitchen not only generates charity income, but also cuts down on unnecessary food waste. The pop-up gallery space is situated upstairs in a beautiful panelled well-lit space, just perfect for viewing artworks.

Julia is an artist who uses locally foraged seaweed in her artwork and uses traditional methods to press them. She also uses it to create other seaside inspired paintings and cyanotypes.

Julia has been awarded an Artist Studio Bursary by The Maltings (Berwick) Trust in partnership with Berwick Open Studios; enabling an artist without permanent studio space to take part in this year’s event. The bursaries provide each artist with a month of dedicated studio space, mentoring opportunities and support towards the cost of materials – giving them the time, space and resources to focus on developing new work.

Julia Sweryda will undertake her residency at the Barracks Artist Studios in September. Her practice explores ocean botanicals and their impact on wellbeing.

Visitors will be able to see Julia’s studio in action during the Open Studios weekends on 26–27 September and 3–4 October - Venue 5. Julia Sweryda Create Berwick
