Sixty Self Portraits

What if a portrait wasn’t about an identity but a form for perception to move through, to observe, sense, dissect?

What if instead of depictions of objects and space, the mind and body interacted with objects and space, moving through them as a trace of unfolding experience?

Where does the boundary between the subject and the experience of that subject lie?

These are some of the questions that come to mind when working in this way.

Self Portrait in Round Mirror

Willow charcoal on cartridge paper
59.4 x 42cm

Playing around with mixing drawing without looking and partial observation yesterday. Nice to play with stark graphic elements against areas that dissolve to give the work more dimension.

Life Drawings 09/06/26

A selection of drawings in willow charcoal from last night’s drawing . I’m developing a more expressive way of working, measuring instinctively by eye with minimal focus on the paper itself. I find that when the experience of drawing becomes too conscious and about depicting something rather than experiencing something, that’s when the drawing falls apart from my experience.

Painting Experiment

I’m not sure if I preferred this painting at the stage before or not when the form seemed to be more hidden. Either way, I feel as though I’m learning from the process. The shock of lemon yellow definitely works but the work shouts rather than whispers. Observing that change means this experiment was worth pursing in my book. I’ve been learning a lot from working in layers and how optical mixing might be utilised for developing more of these works.

Developing Practice

Some recent works in progress with oil on board, working in multiple layers. Though these are paintings, paint is used more as a drawing medium as I’m only concerning myself with one colour at a time. each layer is a rhythmic, gestural response to the movement of the eye across the subject.

The subject is the structure for a dance of perception to take place. It’s not the outward appearance but the interaction with the subject that interests me and what might be revealed through this unfolding process.

Abstract Painting Experiments (Layer One)

Looking at these first layers of some painting experiments this morning. Interesting how the painting on the left seems to jump out at you and the one on the right feels like you’re drawn into the surface. I’m trying to close the gap between my drawing and painting, giving the paintings the same energy as the drawings. The openness, gesture and contrasts seem to be relating to one another nicely, keeping that openness I feel will be important for advancing the work.

Drawing for me is a means of transmitting a kind of energetic charge, the less conscious an activity the better. The less I think during the process the more is revealed and the greater the number of questions about why am I compelled to work like this?
