Large Scale Drawings

I spent some time this weekend scaling up my willow charcoal drawing focused on the subject of the figure in motion to see how utilising my entire body could enhance the outcome. Immediately there was an improvement as the drawings utilised the shoulder hips and torso.

I produced several of these large scale drawings created using two pieces of A2 cartridge paper taped together. A lot of this experimentation begins with opening up to possibilities then after a while, once the crux of what you’re trying to achieve is realised then becomes more focused, narrowing the parameters in order to best serve the work.

The slides in this post show you the various layers drawn and erased shown that contributed to the creation of this drawing (slides in reverse order).

More development exploring the abstraction of a figure in motion. These are my first few attempts to find the optimal density of gesture and rhythm across the page.

Female Figure

Three drawings from last nights life class at with willow charcoal on cartridge paper.

I’ve been drawing almost exclusively with willow charcoal for about three months and it seems to suit the way I work as it promotes expressive movement.

Strong Simplicity

Stripping back the painting process to where the movement of the gesture becomes the focus. The fewer elements there are, the more attention is paid to the nuance, balance and interaction of those elements.

The subject is formless, a moving state of attention that incorporates all the senses. There is no distinct separation between what can be seen and what can be felt. That attention changes pace, rhythm, feeling which simultaneously influences the experience of drawing and what materialises as a result of that experience.
