On 9 September 2026 at 18:00, the Romanian Cultural Institute in Stockholm shall present the feature film The Pitești Experiment, directed by Victoria Baltag, at Klarabiografen – Kulturhuset as part of this year's "New European Film" initiative. The director will grace the screening with her presence and engage in a question-and-answer session with the audience following the conclusion of the film.
The screening takes place at Klarabiografen – Kulturhuset Stadsteatern, Sergels torg, Level 2, Stockholm, within the framework of the "New European Film" cinema series, a strand dedicated to the continent's emerging cinematic voices. This programme is convened by the Romanian Cultural Institute in Stockholm in collaboration with EUNIC Stockholm and the Representation of the European Commission in Stockholm.
Drawing inspiration from real events that transpired within the walls of Pitești Penitentiary between 1948 and 1952, the film offers a cinematic contemplation on one of the most harrowing and contentious episodes of Communist repression in Romania. The narrative traces the plight of a young man who, subjected to the psychological fractures and indignities of captivity, transitions from the state of victimhood to becoming an instrument of the repressive machinery itself.
Beyond its historical and commemorative dimensions, The Pitești Experiment addresses universal themes such as betrayal, faith, fellowship, devotion, hope, liberty, and the profound vulnerability of the human condition when confronted by totalitarian regimes. The film serves equally as a testament to the victims of persecution and as an invitation to reflect upon the imperative to know and comprehend the past.

An independent director, screenwriter, and producer, Victoria Baltag commenced her archival research in 2011, devoting well over a decade to bringing this project to fruition. The Pitești Experiment constitutes the inaugural independent feature dedicated to the Pitești phenomenon and represents one of the most ambitious cinematic undertakings realized in Romania on this subject. The production was brought to life largely through pro bono endeavors and the unwavering commitment of a youthful team operating with exceedingly meager financial resources.
The ensemble cast features Sergiu Moraru, Ion Caramitru, Axel Moustache, Sonia Teodoriu, Rareș Lucaci, Claudiu Oprea, and Avram Iclozan. Notably, the production includes one of the final screen performances of the late Ion Caramitru—an iconic figure of Romanian stage and screen, as well as a former Minister of Culture.
The participation of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Stockholm in the "New European Film 2026" season aims to foster contemporary Romanian cinema and its rising generation of filmmakers, whilst reinforcing the country's cultural presence in Sweden. By incorporating the film into the EUNIC Stockholm itinerary, Swedish audiences are afforded the opportunity to discover not only a formidable piece of independent filmmaking, but also a chapter of recent Eastern European history that remains relatively obscure in the Western world.

Rumänska kulturinstitutet i Stockholm visar långfilmen 𝑬𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒖𝒍 𝑷𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒔̦𝒕𝒊, regisserad av 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐠, onsdagen den 9 september 2026 kl. 18.00 på Klarabiografen i Kulturhuset Stadsteatern i Stockholm. Visningen ingår i årets upplaga av det europeiska filmprogrammet ”Ny europeisk film”. Regissören är på plats och deltar efter filmen i en frågestund med publiken.
Visningen äger rum på 𝐊𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐧, 𝐊𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐡𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐝𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧, 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐠, 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝟐 𝐢 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐦. Filmserien ”Ny europeisk film” lyfter fram nya röster inom europeisk film. Programmet arrangeras av Rumänska kulturinstitutet i Stockholm i samarbete med EUNIC Stockholm och EU-kommissionens representation i Sverige.
Filmen bygger på verkliga händelser i Pitești-fängelset mellan 1948 och 1952 och skildrar ett av de mest dramatiska och omstridda kapitlen i det kommunistiska förtrycket i Rumänien. Filmen följer en ung mans öde. Under fångenskapens påtryckningar och trauman går han från att vara offer till att bli ett redskap för förtrycksmaskineriet.
Utöver den historiska skildringen och arbetet med att hålla minnet levande tar Experimentul Pitești upp universella teman som svek, tro, vänskap, kärlek, hopp, frihet och människans utsatthet inför totalitära system. Filmen är både ett vittnesmål om förtryckets offer och en uppmaning att reflektera över vårt ansvar att känna till och förstå det förflutna.

Victoria Baltag är regissör, manusförfattare och oberoende producent. Hon började göra research för projektet 2011 och arbetade med filmen i mer än tio år. Experimentul Pitești är den första oberoende långfilmen om Pitești-fenomenet och ett av de mest ambitiösa filmprojekt som har genomförts i Rumänien på detta tema. Produktionen har till stor del kunnat genomföras tack vare ideellt arbete och insatser från ett ungt team, med mycket begränsade ekonomiska resurser.
I rollerna ser vi Sergiu Moraru, Ion Caramitru, Axel Moustache, Sonia Teodoriu, Rareș Lucaci, Claudiu Oprea och Avram Iclozan. Filmen innehåller ett av Ion Caramitrus sista framträdanden på film. Han var en central gestalt inom rumänsk teater och film och även tidigare kulturminister.
Rumänska kulturinstitutets medverkan i programmet ”Ny europeisk film 2026” syftar till att lyfta fram samtida rumänsk film och en ny generation filmskapare, samt att stärka Rumäniens kulturella närvaro i Sverige. Genom filmens plats i EUNIC Stockholms program får den svenska publiken möjlighet att upptäcka både en oberoende filmproduktion och ett kapitel ur Rumäniens moderna historia som fortfarande är mindre känt i väst.
