To commemorate the 65th Anniversary of Gertrude Star Flute Band and the 110th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, we are proud to unveil and offer our new Memorial Flag.

This special design pays tribute to the twelve brave men from Gertrude Street who made the ultimate sacrifice 110 years ago, ensuring that their names and memory continue to be honoured for future generations.

Su***de Awareness Training

This morning we had the privilege of hosting a Su***de Awareness course, delivered by Anne Murdoch from Su***de down to Zero.

The session provided valuable insight into recognising the signs that someone may be struggling with suicidal thoughts, as well as practical guidance on how to approach, support, and signpost those who may feel there is no way forward.

It was a truly eye-opening and informative session, highlighting how a simple conversation, a listening ear, or knowing where to seek help can make a life-changing difference. The knowledge shared today has the potential to help prevent tragedy and provide hope to those who may not realise support is available to them.

Mental health struggles can affect anyone, and while they are deeply personal, they are also highly treatable. Reaching out for professional help, leaning on trusted support networks, and taking small positive steps each day can have a significant impact on wellbeing.

We would like to sincerely thank Anne and the team at Su***de Down to Zero for giving up their time to deliver this important training.

We would highly recommend any organisation, community group, or workplace to get in touch with them and consider hosting this course. I’ve attached a link to their website below.
Members of Gertrude Street Defenders LOL 525 & Nettlefield Men’s Wellbeing Group were also in attendance.

Yet again we get a message from Jack Ross to say he has again replaced the flags on our band mural.

Today, we pause to remember our former Chairman, Jim Stitt, on the anniversary of his passing.

7 years have passed, yet Jim remains greatly missed throughout the ranks of our band. He was a true legend who worked tirelessly for the band, always putting the band’s best interests first. He was also deeply committed to the welfare of its members, offering support and guidance in his own unique way.

Beyond the band, Jim was a devoted husband and family man. He selflessly cared for his late wife, June, during her time of need and was a proud and loving father.

Today, our thoughts and prayers are with the Stitt family as we remember a man who left a lasting mark on so many lives.

We remember Jim with great pride and affection, taking comfort in the knowledge that one day we will meet again. Until then, he will remain forever in our hearts and always be remembered as our absent friend.

Gone, but never forgotten.
