An attractive original oil painting on board by Jack Ray, depicting a peaceful autumnal river landscape with a traditional stone bridge, country house, mature trees and distant hills.

The artist has used warm golden-brown tones with touches of blue and green, together with textured brushwork that gives depth to the trees, rocks and flowing water. Signed “Jack Ray” to the lower-right corner.

Presented in a dark wood-effect frame and ready to hang. A charming panoramic country scene that would suit both traditional and contemporary interiors.

The frame measures approx 109 x 54cm

Artist biography:

Jack Ray (British, born 1946) is a post-war artist best known for atmospheric landscape and river scenes. He worked in oils, watercolours and mixed media, frequently using textured impasto techniques on board. Ray was an early member of the influential Inscape Group, which explored imaginative approaches to art and was connected with the later Society for Art of Imagination. His paintings regularly appear at British auctions and are admired for their strong panoramic compositions, rich texture and evocative use of colour.

A striking and scarce 1910 first edition of The Devil’s Motor – A Fantasy by Marie Corelli, illustrated by Arthur Severn R.I. and published by Hodder & Stoughton.

An atmospheric Edwardian fantasy with dramatic supernatural imagery centred around the Devil driving a terrifying motor car through the darkness. Particularly desirable for its wonderful Arthur Severn illustrations, including striking colour plates.

Beautiful original red cloth binding, elaborately decorated and lettered in gilt and black with a dramatic bat motif to the front board.

There is also an attractive handwritten presentation inscription dated Christmas 1910 to the front, adding further period character.

Condition:
Please study all photographs carefully. The outer binding remains particularly attractive for its age, but internally the book is very fragile. The pages are extremely brittle with age, with significant edge losses, tears, detached/loose sections and other deterioration visible. It therefore needs to be handled with considerable care. Maybe the odd page missing. Please view all photos provided.

Despite the condition, this remains a highly decorative and unusual surviving example of this sought-after illustrated work, with some superb colour imagery.

An appealing collector’s copy of one of Corelli’s more unusual fantasy works, particularly attractive for its dramatic early motoring and supernatural subject matter.

🗺️ A Fascinating Glimpse of Old Bedfordshire

It’s wonderful to look closely at an early map like this and see how familiar Bedfordshire villages were recorded over 200 years ago — and how some of their names and spellings have changed over time.

This attractive antique county map is titled “A Map of Bedfordshire, from the Best Authorities”, published by John Stockdale of Piccadilly on 26 March 1805 and engraved by the celebrated mapmaker John Cary.

Look closely and you can spot places such as Bedford, Ampthill, Houghton Conquest, Clophill, Maulden, Shefford, Biggleswade, Shillington and Higham Gobion, together with tiny hamlets, estates, woods and old roads. One particularly interesting detail is Wilstead appearing as “Wilshamstead”, showing how local place names have evolved over the centuries.

The map has beautiful original-style hand colouring to the county boundaries, parks and woodland, together with a colourful compass rose. It is now professionally presented in a gilt frame with a wide cream mount, making it a lovely decorative piece as well as a genuine piece of Bedfordshire history.

Perfect for a Bedfordshire home, local history enthusiast, collector of antique maps, or as a special gift for someone with connections to the county.
