We are very lucky to have some beautiful rivers and lakes locally but there are hidden dangers and tragically, each year lives are lost due to preventable accidents.

We continue to work with partner organisations to try and inform people in our communities of the dangers by engaging with schools, placing signs at areas of concern and a number of other initiatives.

We are now asking for your help to spread the word and raise awareness of the risks and hazards of swimming in local lakes and rivers.

Please share the following with any family or friends that you think might be tempted to swim in open waters and you might help save a life:

• Even the strongest swimmer can quickly find themselves in trouble with hidden currents, weeds and waste items on the river bed
• If someone is in trouble in the water every second counts, call 999 immediately and ask for the fire service
• Police and ambulance staff are not trained to enter the water and the coast guard only operates along the coast, so it’s vital you ask for the fire service
• Download the what3words app or visit the website and learn how to provide a precise location quickly, no matter where you are

Lifebelts allow you to save a life without endangering your own. We provide and maintain lifebelts next to rivers and waterways in Bedford Borough. We regularly inspect lifebelts but please tell us if you notice one is missing or damaged, you can report a lifebelt problem with the link in the comments.
