Another fantastic and well received art installation at this years Latitude Festival by RPM Productions. Lots of debate, discussion and fun exploring our surveillance and photography project. We had many crowds debating and discussing the current issues and conducted several radio and television interviews, so hopefully going out to the wider audience too.

Political Philosopher, historian, politician and all round wind-up merchant, Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527) published a series of books for rulers, a ‘how to rule guide book’ and famously 'The Art of War' both detailed ways in which surveillance and espionage should be advocated and carried out. Robbed from the works of Aristotle, the plagiarist advocated espionage as an honourable craft.
he also believed in the use of force and violence to successfully stabilize power and remove political rivals, nice chap.

Well, it seems they are... Now we learn that "emergency" legislation will be brought forward before Parliament's summer recess, allowing the state to maintain its access to personal data held by internet and phone companies - despite the European Court of Justice judgment on data retention from Apri…

In one week we will be at Latitiude Festival so I thought I would post a daily point of interest around the subject of surveillance. So today:
Panopticon - Designed in the late 18th C by the English Philosopher Jeremy Bentham, the concept of the Panopticon is to allow a single watchman to observe all inmates of an institution without the inmates being able to tell whether or not they are being watched. The name is a reference to Panoptes from Greek mythology; he was a giant with a hundred eyes and thus was known to be a very effective watchman.

Although it is physically impossible for the single watchman to observe all cells at once, the fact that the inmates cannot know when they are being watched means that all inmates must act as though they are watched at all times, effectively controlling their own behavior constantly.
The design consists of a circular structure with an “inspection house” at its centre, from which the manager or staff of the institution are able to watch the inmates, who are stationed around the perimeter.

Bentham himself described the Panopticon as “a new mode of obtaining power of mind over mind, in a quantity hitherto without example". Bit like our modern day CCTV society don't you think?

RPM returns this year to Latitude Festival with another free photography and film based experience, deep in the Faraway Forest we will be giving you the power to become the 'Panopticon'. With nearly six million cctv cameras in the UK you are never far away from being watched. Social Media and the Internet means that we are blissfully unaware that we are being constantly tracked and monitored. Using surveillance equipment and techniques we are giving you the chance to become the watcher rather than the watched – but beware - who's watching who….
