Beaford Archive: An ‘endless tapestry’ of rural north Devon

The Beaford Archive is a testament to the work of the late artist and photographer James Ravilious, who was commissioned by Beaford Arts in 1972 to document the people and landscape of rural north Devon. Ravilious's own work for the Beaford Archive covers the 1970s and 1980s. In addition, he copied over 7,000 old photographs of the same area spanning the period 1880-1920. On his death in 1999, both collections became the property of Beaford Arts. The archive now holds more than seventy thousand images with a selection of seventeen hundred now available to view online at https://beaford.org/beaford-archive . This archive has become what the Royal Photographic Society calls a ‘unique body of work, unparalleled at least in this country for its scale and quality’.

Recently, we spent another lovely day sharing memories and uncovering local history as part of our Lost Decades project, this time in Atherington.

Thank you to everyone who brought along photographs and stories, and to community leads Andy and Jenny for helping bring everyone together. The day was made even better by Jenny’s delicious freshly baked refreshments!

We’re heading to Bideford next, on Saturday 17th October, to continue exploring the photographs and memories that help tell the story of our local communities.

🌊 Dark Waters is coming...

Our Theatre Workhouse friends are creating a brand new show exploring the stories, myths and mysteries held by our waters.

There are also workshops coming up with chances to get involved in creating songs, stories and lanterns for the show.

We’re really pleased to be supporting this project alongside North Devon Unesco Biosphere and communities in Swimbridge, Landkey and Bishops Tawton.

A huge thank you to Neil Maya and the whole quartet for a fantastic night, and to our brilliant Kings Nympton promoters for making it happen.

Delicious food, a fantastic crowd and some seriously beautiful music. We loved it!

Today’s World Teachers’ Day marks 60 years since the adoption of the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.

We’re also celebrating 60 years of Beaford. Education has been at the heart of what we do since our beginnings, so today we’re highlighting the brilliant educators we work with in local schools by sharing images captured during our project - A Voice To Tell Our Story.

The Balkanoes | Balkan in the Barn

One barn. One very big party.

The Balkanoes are bringing their big brass, Balkan energy and festival spirit to a barn in Berrynarbor for their first ever gig in North Devon.

Expect Balkan brass, klezmer, Eastern European folk, big tunes, dancing and joyous chaos.

And because no great barn party is complete without food, La Tavola will be serving up pizza from 7pm. Bring your own drinks, grab a pizza and get ready to dance.
