This morning Rupert (M@HoT’s Creative Director) presented alongside other Access Folk small grants recipients, academic researchers and Katy Spicer from English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) at the British Forum of Ethnomusicology conference . The roundtable discussion on “Theorising Access to Music – To present and be present in contemporary folk singing” was a chance to discuss in depth the process of delivering this action research project over the past 18 months, sharing the challenges and successes of different grant schemes, and the wider learning accomplished through this work. It was an incredible experience to talk, take questions and explore the wider implications of the work that M@HoT’s is a part of!

Last week, Wear’d Aliens spent a day at the beautiful Weardale Methodist Chapel in Stanhope. Through the afternoon, the band took their first steps in documenting the Collingwood Collection, recording 4 tunes with Saul & Rupert. In the evening, they took to the floor in small groups to perform a mix of folk tunes - before a foot stomping headline set! All of this was made possible thanks to funding from and Weardale Together!

We were over the moon to see a sold out audience at the T C R The Hub ceilidh last Friday, with folks coming from as far as Appleby and Billingham to join us for dancing, pies, and the best of times. It was really exciting to welcome new audiences into the venue.

Wear’d Aliens at the Allen Valleys Folk Festival …

We’re really excited that Wear’d Aliens will be playing at our family ceilidh again this year on the Saturday afternoon of our festival (on Saturday 26th September).

Wear’d Aliens were established in 2019, inspired by the rediscovery of the Collingwood Collection, a family tune book tracing over 100 years of musical heritage in Weardale.

Together with an ever-expanding group of young musicians, they breathe new life into distinctly local music that had lain hidden in a dusty corner of the Beamish Archives for over 60 years.

The Wear'd Aliens are led by professional tutors, Saul Rose and Rupert Philbrick.

Wear’d Aliens at the Allen Valleys Folk Festival? We can’t wait!

Festival weekend passes go on sale locally in person on 21st March at St Cuthbert's Church Hall from 10:00am to 12:00noon, then online at 7:00pm on Sunday 22nd March.
