Experience the magic of Christmas at The Witham, with a re-imagining of Hans Christian Andersen’s festive fairy tale The Fir Tree.
Performed by Turrets Youth Theatre, in a beautiful wood stands a little Fir Tree. Kept company by woodland creatures, it enjoys a peaceful life. But the Fir Tree is curious. It dreams of a world outside the forest, yearning for adventure. What will happen when it grows up? Where will it go? And will it be everything the Fir Tree wished for?
Find out on Thursday, December 8. Tickets £5/£3. Details: https://thewitham.org.uk/event/turrets-youth-theatre-the-fir-tree/

We know we’ve been quiet on social media these last few months - but that doesn’t mean Turrets hasn’t been busy! Sunday saw our senior group share their first ever scratch performance as part of an incredible project led by trailblazers that has seen a small team of youth theatres across the UK begin the development of some very important stories… we’ll be sharing more images in the coming days, and thoughts, feedback and quotes from participants and our v select audience from the scratch - and will be keeping you posted as the show develops over the coming months!

A new opportunity for a young person based in Teesdale to play an essential role in helping to oversee the governance of the Tees/Swale programme, which is primarily funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

This would be a brilliant opportunity for any green-minded individuals, passionate about the environment/climate change, who want to develop workplace skills and gain experience in networking, problem-solving and presenting.

A YOUNG person is sought to help oversee a major nature recovery and public access programme over the next two years.

Continuing our look back at our funded project The Wearing of Water, our first workshop weekend saw community members and junior & senior Turrets participants exploring ideas around localness. Together they mapped out Teesdale as they understood it, the places of importance, the journeys and routes that each of them took, and how senses of scale could shift depending on your location. Over 2 days, participants began to breathe life into the Weather Gods they’d been tasked with creating, thinking about qualities of movement & expression, setting out boundaries between magic, myth and our daily lives.

A little over 12 months ago, Turrets led a 3-month R&D with professional artists & an inter-generational group of local theatre makers. With the first anniversary of The Wearing of Water’s public showcase this week, we’re taking a moment to look back at the stages of the project’s creation. Stage 1 involved a series of workshop days for the artist team. Together we immersed ourselves in the landscape of Teesdale & a wealth of reading and research materials; creating digital soundscapes, folkloric costumes, scraps of movement, narrative and performance together as we came to understand the process of modern myth making we intended to facilitate.

Towards the end of last term, the Senior Group were working on script analysis with actor & writer Ed Cole (once upon a time, a Turret himself!) Ed acted as project mentor for the Autumn Term; supporting our facilitators and participants to map the work we have already created together - and together identifying our strengths/weaknesses & embedding new skills and ideas to take forward in our future performances and projects.

Turrets has been quiet online for a while, I think the mass exposure to all things screen-based because of lockdown left us feeling mute. But today, I’m reflecting on the things that DID happen over the last few months , and a much needed reminder that how things are right now, isn’t how they’ll be forever. Both our Junior & Senior groups put so much into the creative spaces they share together, and have built a nurturing and supportive community between them - there’s nothing that drama & friendship can stop! @ The Witham

This week was meant to be the end of term, a riot of sunshine and colour and celebration at the end of another year. Instead, it feels like we're miming our way through proceedings - with all the main headlines on mute.

This week Company Three brought their phenomenal youth theatre project the to a close. After 12+ weeks of working together, Turrets have produced their penultimate video. It's all about clothes, and how to work those Lockdown Looks!

In March 2020, as the nationwide lockdown came into place because of the Coronavirus Pandemic, London-based youth theatre Company Three launched a project fo...
