πŸŽ™οΈ 03: Empathy & Grief: Being Alongside Someone in Their Pain

What does empathy actually look like when someone is grieving? πŸ’›

In Episode 3 of The Empathy Room, I'm joined by psychologist Dr Melissa Harrison to talk about grief, and what it means to support someone without trying to fix what can't be fixed.

There's been a lot happening behind the scenes at Thatch Creative lately... πŸ‘€

The Empathy Room has (understandably πŸ˜‚) been taking up a lot of the airtime around here recently, but alongside launching a podcast, I've actually been working on some really lovely client projects too.

There's been design work for a Christian charity, training for another, a new brand for a founder launching her consultancy, and I'm about to get stuck into a school rebrand.

And, somewhere amongst all of that, I'm slowlyyyyy overhauling my own website and figuring out what the next chapter of Thatch Creative looks like.

I've also been quietly trialling something new: Clarity Sessions.

I'll tell you more about those properly another day, but essentially they're a chance to bring me the tangled-up thing in your head and have someone help you make sense of it, work out what actually matters, and figure out what happens next.

I've been testing them with a few guinea pigs, and this is what one of them had to say... πŸ‘‰πŸ»

I'm still testing and refining them before they properly make their way out into the world, so if you're curious and fancy joining my little tester team, drop me an email at [email protected]. πŸ‘€

P.S. Also... NEW BRAND PHOTOS. πŸ“Έ Huge thanks to Amy for taking these, and to The Beehive Dover for letting us descend with approximately 700 props. πŸ’›

EPISODE TWO IS HEREEEE. πŸŽ™οΈπŸ’›

What if we're so worried about saying the wrong thing that we end up saying nothing at all?

I'm joined by Hannah to talk about empathy, diversity, race and representation, and why an imperfect conversation can sometimes be better than no conversation at all.

THE EMPATHY ROOM IS NOW OPENNNNNN. πŸŽ‰πŸŽ™οΈ

I HAVE A PODCAST. An actual, real-life, out-in-the-world podcast. πŸ˜‚

After months of planning, recording, editing, designing, writing, overthinking and repeatedly saying β€œI'm launching a podcast!”... you can finally LISTEN TO IT.

The Empathy Room is a podcast about what happens when we choose to understand each other a little better. Through honest conversations and real people's stories, we're exploring empathy in all sorts of places, from grief, health and faith to diversity, immigration, chronic illness, young people and more.

And we're starting at the beginning:

πŸŽ™οΈ 01: Why Empathy? Choosing to Understand Each Other

In this first episode, I'm joined by guest host Amy from Bloomify.Design where we talk about why I think empathy matters, why I've created this podcast in the first place, and what I hope The Empathy Room might become.

AND because apparently launching one episode wasn't enough...

🎧 01.1 BONUS: Why Perfection is Restriction is out today too.

Both episodes are available RIGHT NOW on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube.

I have poured a ridiculous amount of myself into this little project, and it feels very surreal that it doesn't belong only to me anymore. πŸ₯Ή

So... come on in.

The Empathy Room is officially open. πŸ’›

SO... how is The Empathy Room actually going to work? πŸŽ™οΈ

With FOUR DAYS to go until launch, I thought I should probably tell you. πŸ˜‚

Launch week is a little bit special.

πŸŽ™οΈ Monday 14th September: Episode 1 lands! My fabulous friend Amy turns the tables on me as we talk about why I created The Empathy Room, what empathy actually means, and why I think it matters.

πŸŽ™οΈ Thursday 17th September: Episode 2 lands! I'm joined by the amazing Hannah Spence to talk about empathy and diversity.

Then we'll settle into the usual Season One rhythm:

Main episodes every other Monday, where I'll be joined by brilliant guests to dig into empathy across all sorts of areas of life. And in between, there'll be shorter bonus episodes, where we'll carry on the conversation with something a little different.

So there'll regularly be something new waiting for you in The Empathy Room. πŸ’›

You can listen on Spotify and Apple Podcasts, or watch the full episodes on YouTube.

And if you don't fancy remembering the schedule, honestly, SAME. πŸ˜‚ Join The Empathy Room podcast mailing list (https://tinyurl.com/TheEmpathyRoom) and I'll let you know when each new conversation lands.

FOUR DAYS.

See you Monday.πŸŽ™οΈ

ONE. WEEK. TO. GO. πŸŽ™οΈπŸ’›

This time next week, The Empathy Room will officially be OPEN.

EEEEEEEEEEEE.

After months of recording, editing, planning, designing, second-guessing and occasionally wondering why on earth I thought making a podcast was a good idea... πŸ˜‚

WE ARE NEARLY THERE.

The first episode lands on Monday 14th September, where I'm joined by my fabulous friend Amy to turn the tables and talk about why I created The Empathy Room in the first place, what empathy actually means, and why I think it matters so much.

And then throughout Season One, I'll be opening the door to conversations with some brilliant humans about what empathy looks like across very different parts of life.

Some conversations are joyful. Some are difficult. Some have challenged the way I think. Some made me laugh. Some made my eyes leak.

And I am SO ready for you to finally hear them.

ONE WEEK.

I can't quite believe I'm saying that. πŸ˜πŸŽ™οΈ

The Empathy Room opens Monday 14th September.

See you there? πŸ’›

Anyone else have a holiday in August and it already feels like it was six months ago?! πŸ˜‚

I had SUCH a lovely break away with my family.

Quality time, adventures, sea air, river swims, laughing until I couldn't breathe. Lots of joy. πŸ’›

And then you come home and somehow life just... starts again. And usually at a faster pace than before.

The emails are there. The work is there. The washing is DEFINITELY there. September arrives out of nowhere. Everything starts gearing up again and suddenly that lovely slow holiday feeling disappears remarkably quickly. Within SECONDS.

So this is as much for me as it is for anybody else:

*You don't have to wait until your next holiday to make space for things that make you feel good.*

I'm giving myself permission to take a minute to breathe, and to deliberately plan some little bits of post-holiday joy amongst all the STUFF.

Not another holiday. (Although... TEMPTED) πŸ˜‚ Just small things.

Seeing people I love. Going somewhere nice. Getting outside. Having an afternoon where I don't need to achieve anything. Whatever brings a little bit of that "life is more than my to-do list" feeling back.

I don't want to save all the good stuff for a couple of weeks a year.

So if you've come back from a summer break and already feel like you've been catapulted straight into the BUSY...

This is yours AND my permission to put some joy back in the diary. πŸ’›

What are you putting in yours?

MEET THE GUESTS. πŸŽ™οΈπŸ’›

Look at these brilliant humans!

When I first started planning The Empathy Room, I knew I didn’t want to just talk about empathy. I wanted to hear from people with different experiences about what empathy actually looks like in real life.

And these are some of the people who said yes. πŸ₯Ή

In Season One, we’re getting into conversations about:

πŸ’› Diversity
πŸ’› Grief
πŸ’› Chronic illness & business
πŸ’› The church
πŸ’› Health & faith
πŸ’› Immigration
πŸ’› Eating disorders
πŸ’› Young people

There are conversations in this season that have made me laugh, challenged me, taught me things, and made me stop what I was doing while editing just to sit with what somebody had said.

And in TWO WEEKS, I finally get to start sharing them with you.

The Empathy Room opens 14.09.26. πŸŽ™οΈ

Which conversation are you most interested in hearing? πŸ‘€

GIVEAWAY TIME. πŸŽπŸ’›

With The Empathy Room launching in just over TWO WEEKS, I thought we could have a little pre-launch celebration.

So I'm giving away a little bundle of Empathy Room joy, including:

πŸ““ A limited edition Empathy Room notebook

πŸ’› A bundle of stickers

And because this is The Empathy Room, I don't just want you to tag three friends, share to your stories, stand on one leg and perform a small dance to enter... πŸ˜‚ Nope.

Instead, I want to hear from YOU.

There are three ways to get your name in the hat:

1️⃣ Tell me what empathy means to you.

2️⃣ Share with me a time someone got empathy right!

It could be something huge or something tiny. Something somebody said, did, noticed or understood that made a difference.

3️⃣ Join The Empathy Room podcast mailing list. πŸŽ™οΈ (https://tinyurl.com/TheEmpathyRoom)

Already on it? That entry is already yours automatically.

Do one = one entry.

Do two = two entries.

Do all three = three entries.

You can answer the questions in the comments, or send me a DM if you'd rather your answer stayed private. πŸ’›

One more thing: I'd love to include some of your thoughts in a future episode of The Empathy Room. If you're happy for me to share your answer anonymously, just add β€œhappy to share” when you reply. Completely optional and it won't affect your entry.

Entries close 8pm Sunday 6th September and I'll contact the winner shortly after.

GOOD LUCK. πŸŽ‰

And thank you for helping me start The Empathy Room in exactly the way I hoped we would: by actually talking to each other. πŸ’›
